Ernest just hopeless in sets 1 and 3  just hopeless in his first outing for the year.

Seeds continue to tumble at the Heineken Open.

Well done Jiri, solid all day, only broken once.

Re: Auckland Heineken Open R2: Jiri Vesely Demolishes Ernests Gulbis 6-2 3-6 6-1

Gulbis's forehand lookes even weirder now. Very strange backswing

Re: Auckland Heineken Open R2: Jiri Vesely Demolishes Ernests Gulbis 6-2 3-6 6-1

Gulbis actually played pretty inspired in the middle set. He had to come up with some great shots just to take points off of Vesely, who started to come down. Impressive recollection of his composure to take the lead early in the third. Big shots, nice defending when he needed to, and especially good play at the net at times.

Is there a worst sight in tennis than Gulbis' fearhand?

what a mess this tournament has turned out to be

Isner/Monfils/Ferrer all withdrawing, Robredo out with an injury, GGL and Giraldo don't even make the 2nd round, RBA retires, Lu losing to Ramos, the top half finalist one of Pouille, Ramos, Mannarino or Falla, only 2/8 seeds left before the QF, and now this...

48 UEs in 24 games for Mugbis - that must be some sort of record. And the most surprising part of it was the fact that Mugbis' backhand was as useless as his forehand today as half of those UEs came from what is supposed to be top-5 BH. I thought he might be rusty, but this was something else - this was beyond pathetic. Vesely didn't have to do much, just put the ball in court - he actually won the 1st set 6:2 while hitting 1 winner. Now the only question is - who will be the lucky guys to draw Mugbis in AO - that would be like hitting a jackpot.

On unrelated note - is this the only 250 tournament on tour without hawkeye on center court? That's embarrassing.

Yuck. If Gulbis can't make 2nd week of AO, I will suspend my Gulbis fandom until he can actually get some decent results. Just too disgusting lately.

traditionally ernie's worst part of the year, and he doesn't disappoint... I can see an early Aussie Open exit coming. He really needs points as well with all the success he had last year between now and The French....

Nope, it's a crime against humanity. He never had the cleanest technique on the FH, but it used to be a lot better when he first came on the tour. Looked pretty normal back then, a bit wristy but otherwise just fine. Backhand was always the star of the show though.

what a pointless tournament. no rest before AO, relatively far to fly from, no wonder everyone trying to get away as soon as handed the appearance money (or a sheep in new zealand currency).
