ATP Will Test For EPO

By Tennis Week

The ATP will institute random blood tests for the endurance-enhancing drug EPO starting next month. Erythropoieten (EPO) is regarded as a stamina-enhancing substance that increases oxygen-carrying capacity for blood.

According to an Associated Press report, the ATP player's council approved the proposal to test for EPO at a meeting prior to the start of the U.S. Open.

Players will be reminded of the new tests in an ATP meeting in Melbourne on January 11, two days before the Australian Open starts.

"We will have blood tests both out of competition and at tournaments," ATP Tour Vice President David Higdon told the Associated Press today. " We informed our players through mailings, a weekly newsletter. They've all been briefed quite extensively on this process."
