Thread dedicated to the players percentage of return game won[RGW] in 2016 and in their careers.

I used the data from Official Site of Men's Professional Tennis | ATP World Tour | Tennis and live rankings from Live ATP Rankings (Sorry Slasher)

You can find the lists on the ATP official sites but they're not completely accurate(players missing including Murray, Federer..etc.) so I made my own out of the TOP50 + two players outside TOP50 who stood out this season: Schwartzman and Dzumhur. Here are the ATP site lists:
Return Games Won | ATP World Tour | Tennis career

Return Games Won | ATP World Tour | Tennis 2016

I ranked the players according to 2016. Their career stats are in the brackets.

The pattern is: Rank Name RGW in 2016 RGW in Career

Note: If the players have the same RGW percentage in 2016, the one with the better career RGW percentage will be positioned above. If both are the same, they'll be ranked according to alpabetical order.

1. DJOKOVIC 37% [32%]

49. ANDERSON 10% [17%]
49. POSPISIL 10% [15%]
51. ISNER 9% [11%]
52. KARLOVIC 3% [9%]

The players that improved the most are: Monfils from 22% in 2015. to 32% in 2016. and Kyrgios from 17% to 25%. Note: RGW is likely to decline by the end of the season (grass, fast hard, indoors)

The players that declined the most are: Ferrer from 34% in 2015 to 25% in 2016 and Karlovic from 10% in 2015 to a miserable 3% this year. However, he was injured most of the season. I'd also like to point out Cilic whose RGW is steadily declining from 27% in 2012 to 19% in the last 2 seasons.

RGW is the most important return stat that we have atm. It doesn't directly rank the quality of players ROS. The whole game of a player determines the RGW including his favorite surface, since clay courters have a higher RGW for obvious reasons.

I still believe this is a solid way to show how good a players ROS is and how much it has improved/declined.

ATP also calculates a return rating and they made a leaderboard based on it. RGW is still the most important stat of that rating and as with the previous leaderboards, I'm not sure if any players are missing. Here's the link:

No1e should take some return lessons from Dr Ivo, true GOAT in this aspect :worship: Adding another 3 percent to his return would make him absolutely unbeatable.

The comparison with 2016 is a bit misleading, because of course it is 2016 so far but so far we have only played the first half of the season which is where slower courts speeds are generally used - hence most player's appear to have improved their return stats in 2016. They haven't actually necessarily improved their return game, most of those will certainly go down once we make it through the grass and indoor seasons that favour the server more.

yeah pretty much this.

We've practically only been through the slower stage of the year when it comes to surfaces. From now on things are gonna be a bit faster(thus poor returns stats compared to earlier in the season) starting with Wimbledon then faster HC in the the next half of the season.

Return stats should start dropping by then.
