Was it really a tank or just a relaxed Thiem against a very motivated Berrettini? Don't forget how close was their match in Vienna. Why would anyone tank when big money and points are on the line?

Good win for Berrettini, good to see him get some points and money and salvage something. First match vs Nole was a horror show, kept it respectable vs Fed, and now this

But for Thiem, but of a missed opportunity imo. The race with Thiem and Med for the #4 seed at AO is very very close, every point and match counts. But maybe Thiem just had a let down after two fantastic wins over Fed and Nole, very much understandable

Matteo clearly played his best match today, because he didn't feel any pressure. It will build his confidence for the next season.
Dominic wisely preserved his energy for the semifinal. Win-win situation for both.

Yep, I just mentioned this point in the "Qualification thread"..Meddy has more than pride and paycheck to play for in the Zverev match. AO 4th seed is on the line--which is a big thing..

Another motivation for Medvedev to win his match against Zverev would be keeping his Top 4 ranking YE# and for seeding purposes at AO'2020.

After Thiem loss to Berrertini , current race ranking:

4- Medvedev 5705 pts
5- Thiem 5425 pts

if Meddy gets his 200pts worth by beating Zverev, the only way for Thiem to overtake him would to win the whole thing which will vault him to 6325. Otherwise he falls short of Meddy by mere 80 points even if reaches the Final.

It's better to lose today, than be more tired in a semifinal or final and lose.

In AO there will be a lot of lower ranked dangerous players like Murray. Seed won't matter and Dominic's goal for next year is RG, not AO.

Yes I agree in that. Better to win SF and F than another RR match. Soon as he lost the TB in first set it was obvious the rest of the way

it was basically a tank... Thiem barely chased any balls, was like 10mph off both his BH and FH compared to his previous match and never really engaged Berrettini in longer rallies .. he certainly wasn't anywhere near 100%

Thiem beat Djokovic and Federer and Berrettini beat Thiem so Berrettini>Federer and Djokovic. Nonetheless, Thiem still tried to win but didn’t give 150% since he was already qualified and probably didn’t want to exert too much before semis. Good for Berrettini that he actually got a win out of this tournament considering his horrendous showings in his first 2 matches.

Not having more than 3 points over 9 strokes was a bit odd IMO. I don't think Domi necessarily tanked the 1st Set but he did seem flat overall. Still better to lose than later. Congrats to Berretini who still had to put effort to actually grab the win especially with his serving and touch at times.
