Luza becomes new Argentine captain

The Argentine Tennis Association announced that Gustavo Luza has replaced Alejandro Gattiker as captain of Argentina’s Davis Cup team.

Gattiker, who this year led Argentina to its first Davis Cup semifinal since 1990, has stepped down in order to start coaching Mariano Zabaleta, one of nine Argentines currently ranked in the world’s top 100.

Luza, who forged a reputation as a specialist doubles player, contested three Davis Cup doubles rubbers with Javier Frana, and was a member of the Argentine team that reached the Davis Cup semifinals in 1990.

The 39-year-old moves from his post as director of the Argentine tennis academy, where he was responsible for the development of young players that included Guillermo Coria and David Nalbandian.

Luza said: “I looked over everything that tennis has given me and I feel really honoured. As a pro, I really wanted to play Davis Cup and I achieved that. Now as a coach, after the experience I enjoyed with Gattiker, this is the icing on the cake.”

Argentina, defeated 3-2 by Russia in last month’s semifinals, has a home tie against Germany in the first round of the 2003 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas from 7-9 February.
