GOAT match. Both players cramping, Smith also injured. Looked like an amateur match at the end.
Thompson has an awful lot of heart, was almost down 0-4 in the 5th, but kept fighting and it paid off as Smith's condition got worse and worse and worse while Thompson's got merely worse and worse. Just like last year's final, lots of bad calls and almost all against Thompson.

I don't like Smith, robotic and ugly game, but he deserves WC after that.

Crazy match, Smith could barely walk the last couple games and neither guy could serve towards the end

Thought this might have been deja vu for Thompson (lost R1 to Janowicz from 2 sets up last year)
Should've made a bet when Thompson was cramping and down a break in the 5th

Kudos to Thompson for hanging onto the match and waiting for JP to fold

He was also up 2-0 in the final of this contest last year and won it in a fifth, after losing the 3rd set off of what has to be the worst call tennis has ever seen (6 or so inches out). Though that 5th set was strangely unclose.

Did anyone watch the wildcard playoffs live, this user kept slagging all the Aussie players of claiming to be a professional tennis player who knew them all. The only good thing she said was that Thompson has a lot of heart. I wonder how many things she was right about. :worship:

he produced some great shotmaking v Janowicz last year, was hoping he could pull through here. epic stuff.

Good for the game. Smith is a very boring player and Thompson is fairly talented from what I saw vs Janowicz last year

I actually quite like Smith's game, but he isn't Grand Slam MD material. Still, quite a lot of heart here to fight back from 0-2 in sets down.

What an exciting match! I stayed up til 1:15 am watching the end of it. I agree that Smith deserves a WC for the performance but I'm sure that he won't get it, not including Thompson they have 4 WC to give out with 5 good options who didn't play AO Playoff (Kokkinakis, Duckworth, Ebden, Kubler, Millman) and with Asian, French, USA, I don't think they have room for Smith.
I can see Kokk, Duck, Millman, and Smith being the 4 to get it

They would probably give a WC to Smith over Kubler, and potentially Ebden who has been awful
They flagged earlier that they'd probably give a wildcard to Omar Jasika off his junior USO double slam win, and he didn't play the wildcard either, so pretty much a lock I think.

Most likely five are Kokkinakis, Millman, Duckworth, Thompson, Jasika.

Kubler would get it on ranking, but hasn't played on hard for a couple of years so more likely Brisbane or Sydney if he's game to try his dodgy knees on another surface (he was getting an MRI last heard to test readiness).

Ebden highly unlikely given how far back he has crashed in the rankings, but I guess an outside chance.

Saville would probably get one ahead of Smith imo - had to pull out of the wildcard SF playoff due to injury, but made a lot of progress rankings wise during the year despite injury probs, far more so than Smith.

There are a couple of others who have done a lot more over the year too who I'd look at ahead of Smith play-off SF notwithstanding - Bolt and O'Connell for example.

Yeah Jasika is another good one. Kubler played well this year but it was on clay. Ebden is a good player who had a crappy year, and Smith is a good player who really hasn't had great results yet. I think Kokkinakis and Duckworth, and probably Millman are guaranteed, but the last one (and maybe 2) are up for grabs. Should be interesting

Ebden's claims to being a good player are debatable - he got into the top 100 off a slew of challengers, but then couldn't win a match at tour level, but didn't play any challengers to make up the deficit until too late.

Not entirely convinced about Smith either - potential as a doubles player, but really hasn't translated promise of college wins to challenger level with any consistency.
Yeah agree Smith is only a GS quallies player, he lacks the big shot and is too inconsistant, shame he couldnt win but GS quallies is where he should say. 4 Discretionary WC i think will go to Kok, Millman ,duckworth.... the last one is too hard to predict.. Jasika, but i hope not he should stick to quallies WC, Saville if he isnt injured, Ben Mitchell but his form has been shocking

Jasika would surely have played in the wildcard playoff if he hadn't already been guaranteed one - and last year Kokkinakis was further behind where he is now and did a pretty good job with his wildcard, winning a match; at least a chance Jasika can do the same.

Seems to me the choice is really between Saville and Duckworth - Duckworth is obviously higher ranked, but has had lots of wildcards before, hasn't really made much of a dent on the rankings ladder this year due to a lot of losses to very lower ranked players. But has won two challengers, so... Saville on the other hand, has jumped up a lot in the rankings and on the face of it the more likely of the two to make the jump to the top 100 sooner rather than later.
no way ebden gets one he cant beat anyone atm
i would go
Saville
Duckworth
Kokkinaskis
Thompson
Jasika or Millman or mitchell
