Didn't saw this one coming but LOOOOVE it!!! Finally a decent match by Gil. Don't know when Dodig get injured, cause it wasn't on a TV court, but awesome result for my fellow portuguese! 2nd GS win ever for Fred. The other one was also in AO, last year agains Cuevas!!

Next round it will be hard but far from impossible. Granollers it's no boogie man.

:haha: You can ask lots of players today. Many bagels and and breadsticks in the court. The bakery is producing in large amounts!

As for me, I am going to sleep now, and more rested after Fred's win. :wavey:

don't know what is good with Gil in second round of HC major

Dodig is clearly overranked at the moment but if he continues like this will get out of top 100 in short time

Dodig took a set off the last AO champion. Will the trend continue?

I came from a very small country in terms of tennis, so any achievement made by a portuguese player it happens to be a very happy moment, as a fan. Just to people have an idea, this was the 4th victory in a MD GS draw EVER in portuguese men's tennis. 2 from Machado (RG and USO), 2 from Gil (both in AO).

Nuno Marques beat João Cunha e Silva in the 1st round of 1991 Australian Open :)

That is so untrue!

Nuno Marques has at least 4 wins in the main draw of a GS:

- 1990, French Open, 1st Round
Nuno Marques defeats C. Miniussi (ARG), 6-1, 7-6, 6-2
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1990_French_Open_-_Men's_Singles#Section_3

- 1991, Australian Open, 1st Round
Nuno Marques defeats João Cunha e Silva (POR), 4-6, 6-4, 1-6, 6-3, 6-4
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1991_Australian_Open_-_Men's_Singles#Section_1

- 1991, US Open, 1st Round
Nuno Marques defeats Michibata (CAN), 6-3, 6-4, 7-6
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1991_US_Open_-_Men's_Singles#Section_2

- 1995, US Open, 1st Round
Nuno Marques defeats Bhupathi (IND), 6-7, 7-5, 6-1, 6-3
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1995_US_Open_-_Men's_Singles#Section_2

In any case, it was very good for Gil to win this game and I, too, was happy! :yeah:

Nice one Gil, defending your second biggest points on your breakdown. Score line pretty clearly indicates an injury 2nd set though. But if Dodig was injured for that long, he could've stayed 2 more games. I guess he wanted to avoid the triple breadstick like Gil avoided the triple bagel versus Ferrer in 2010 AO (6-0 6-0 2-0 ret).

Go Gil! So important for Gil to set his mind, and reinforce his belief that he is a Top-100 player. Now, a decent chance tomorrow, it was a good draw, hope he can take advantage of it, he has three months to collect 275 points just to stay in Top-100.

Sorru, didn't knew that. Thanks for the correction :worship:

Well we don't know if it was in the 2nd set. It could be in the 3rd, or even in the 4th. Dodig had LOTS of BP's during the match, but wasted almost all of them, so it's not like he wasn't able to win games during the majority of the match.

But yes, even if it was in the 2nd that he pick up the injury, since he held for so long, he could have take it 2 more games. But like you said he didn't want to be embaressed like Fred was 2 years ago versus Ferrer, so he give up the fight.

Go Gil! So important for Gil to set his mind, and reinforce his belief that he is a Top-100 player. Now, a decent chance tomorrow, it was a good draw, hope he can take advantage of it, he has three months to collect 275 points just to stay in Top-100.
Well it's not to stay cause he is not INSIDE the top 100. To be inside he got to beat Granollers and even if he does that, he will rise only to somethng like 96th or 97th. And after that, it will be Tsonga in the 3rd. So only one more one winnable match (and very hard as well).

BTW, Gil said on Facebook that Dodig had a back problem.
