A bit tight for Novak but always knew it would be. Struff far better than his ranking. That three DF game from Novak was not the business. Oh well, moving on.

Thought he did enough to get through. Wasn't at all serious until he dropped set 3. Looks ok off the ground, defensive skills are continuing to decline. Serve is still too up/down but hopefully it'll improve in the next couple of matches.

Champo marches on...Feels weird to see him seeded numbah 2

Was a bit too relaxed today for my liking.Should have closed out 6-2 the first set.He does have a blind spot against the Big Hitters.Never used slice nor the drop shot. Was needlessly engaging in whose shots was more powerful kind of rally..Should have used variety against the thick german...

Overall good match for a 1st round of a slam where you have one of the favorites playing. Good test for Novak, I prefer this to having a trample that is less demanding than a practice, round one is the best time to acknowledge issues and work on them, I couldn't care less about the lost set.
Great match by Jan-Lenard, takes his first ever set vs. Novak and in what fashion. He was serving well, hitting well, didn't break easily in the rallies, and he believed until the very end.

Not a typical GS 1st round match for Novak. Struff was the toughest non-seeded opponent (on par with Anderson) and Novak had to switch into higher gear from the very first point.

In addition to playing on high level, Novak had to be sharp and focused in order to win the crucial first set. Small dips in the concetration lead to Strufi breaking back in the 9th game. The TB was story for itself. Struff gave everything he had, and NOvak had to switch into highest gear physically and mentally to win it. Even then, a lucky point for Jan-Lenard alsmost turned the TB around, but Novak managed to take another MB and to clinch the set with a clutch serve.

2nd set- Strufi fell mentally and who wouldn't. Played his best tennis agasint Novak and still fell short. Therefore Jan-lenard sprayed errors around the court and NOvak just cruised to 2-0

When everyone expected another easy set for Novak, Struff decided to fight. He surprised Novak and cought him unprepared - He rose his level while NOvak was in cruising mode. Have to mention that Craig O'Shannessy advices must have helped Strufi to be well prepared and to put a working game-plan that help to be on pair in the 1st and to win the third set.

JL again fell sharply both mentally and phisically in the 4th. While in 2nd the reason was closely lost set after giving everything, this time the reason was winning a set after giving everything. Novak on th eohter side siwtched into higher gear and the result was a breadstick.

900 wins and counting

Not sure if facing a tough opponent and having to raise the level into a "2nd week mode" this esarly is good or bad. Its great that Novak found his "ATP cup form" immediatelly, but on the other side he will have to maintain this form for full two weeks. And even more he will only need to utilize his 2nd gear in the next two rounds and still be prepared to switch into the highest gear again from Sunday.

A pretty difficult first round match, lets see if being tested in the first round will help him or not.

4 threads, really?

Pretty routine win for Djokovic, despite close 1st set and a set lost never really in doubt. Struff is a dangerous player but rather a good matchup for Novak.

Right now that would be Fucsovics, followed by Querrey.

Novak pissed away a point and a potential break when he hit a tweener instead of a conventional passing shot (the ball was a sitter). Struff made him pay by winning the set, haha! Gotta hand it to Struff, he fought like hell in this match.

A good test for Novak, even if he had to work a lot harder than he would have liked for a R1 match. Buckle down, enough of the Kyrgios impersonations, and focus on winning that eighth title.
