Cup team head off to Honduras

By Derek deChabert

Bermuda's Davis Cup tennis team will fly off to Honduras tomorrow to compete in the America's Zone Group IV which includes Costa Rica, Haiti, and the US Virgin Islands.

Trinidad, who were also in the group, have dropped out, leaving it a four-horse race.

The Bermuda team that comprises of Jensen Bascome, Gavin Manders, Jordan Talbot and David Thomas along with captain Steve Bean, will represent the country in both men's singles and doubles.

The round robin format starts on Wednesday and continues until Friday, with the top two teams promoting to Division III in the Davis Cup.

Bermuda Lawn Tennis Association president David Lambert stated that in order for Bermuad to be competitive, it starts with the captain of the team right the way down.

"Steve was a part of first Davis Cup team and has been not only captain but also manager a number of times," said Lambert.

"You play two singles and a doubles match every day and he has a good idea of how to play our team, which is important.

"It is hot in Honduras now, and this will also play a part in the games as the competition progresses. But our team will be ok as long as they apply themselves."

Of the teams Bermuda will be facing, only Costa Rica are ranked in the top 100 in the world, coming in at 95.

Haiti aren't too far behind at 105, while the US Virgin Islands and Bermuda are 120 and 132 respectively.
