I know its early but I think that Alexei and Alex (De Minaur) deserve their own profiles as they are about to become the next talked about Juniors now that Jasika, Bourchier, Mousley :)eek:) and Polmans start to embark upon their senior careers.

Alexei Popyrin born 05.08.1999 is currently ranked 165 (highest 155) in the Junior rankings. This is before you take into account that 53 of the players ahead of him are no longer eligible to play Junior events, so effectively he is 112.

Unlike Alex De Minaur, Popyrin has not participated in any of the recent December Showdown events. He is based in Valencia, Spain and is rated one of Australia's highest prospects in recent years. Although not having won any events in 2014, Alexei played mostly Grade 1 (highest) and Grade 2 events despite being only 15. He made a final in Uzbekistan but was beaten in 3 sets.

Re: Alexei Popyrin

People, people, calm down a little. Let's not hype this kid too much. Winning a junior Grand Slam is great, but his best main tour results are two Futures QFs in the USA last year.

Agreed, a few previous Oz junior winners have notably gone nowhere (as yet). Still good to see all the same...

His face pic does a little, but Nadal plays more with his arms than with his face :)

He potentially has great career ahead of him, but so do many others. More have the potential than realise the potential.

WOW. Impressive 17 match winning streak :O

French Open / Roland Garros - Winner
Trofeo Bonfiglio - Winner
Mediterranee Avenir - Winner

Has this kind of hat trick been done before? Grade 1 - Grade A - Grand Slam ?
An amazing run! I don't know if it has been done before. He's a genuine shot at junior number one this year (currently number two).

Given he has said he isn't playing any more juniors, I'm guessing this won't happen! Nice run though.

Now let's hope his trajectory is better than some of our recent past junior slam winners.

Since 2000 so far only one (relative) success out of seven Oz winners - Anderson (disgraced); Jasika (still languishing at 268, currently 23 in the nextgen race); Kyrgios (ok, is up there but not nearly where his potential is); Saville (languishing at 326); Bernie (enuf said); Brydan Klein (defected, hasn't made it into top 100), Todd Reid (long since retired, never made it into top 100)...

If you look at the points peeling off the world number one's ranking this year, Alexei could still make it to the top. Not just statistically possible, but a fair chance.

Yeah, a lot of the boys' Grand Slam winners from about 1998-2005 went on to reasonable to excellent success, but there's not too much doing since then (some exceptions of course).

Appears that height of Roland Garros junior champions is a good statistical predictor. If just look at the numbers, it would appear that if a player is 190+ AND wins junior RG he´s on track to top 20, even top 10. If he´s under 188cm the statistical chances are not good
(10 out of 10 players under 190 didn´t make a quick ascend, 3 our of 3 players over 190cm height did. Rublev is close). Interesting.

Hmm, sample size seems far too small to me to be sure that height is the main explanatory factor. And even if it is, probably just indicates extent to which won in juniors because physical development relatively well advanced at a young age compared to peers.

To be really useful, you would have to include the others who played each year and look at who succeeded and failed and whether or not winning/height are well correlated.

In fact if you look at recent results you might conclude it is better to be runner up than win at junior RG. The two two junior RG finalists in recent years who have made top ten (Zverev and Thiem) both lost at RG; in the last six years, 4/6 runners-up are doing better than the person who defeated them, and I suspect if you looked at the field more broadly the effect would be even stronger:

2016: Blancaneaux (now 482) df Auger-Aliassime (now 231)
2015: Tommy Paul (now 355) df Taylor Fritz (now 128)
2014: Rublev (95) df Munar (266)
2013: Garin (220) df Zverev (12)
2012: Coppejans (178) df Peliwo (315)
2011: Fratangelo (132) df Thiem (8)

It is interesting. However, if you go back two more years to the '02 and '03 winners, both Gasquet and Wawrinka are under 188cm and have gone onto stellar careers. Okay, you might not call Gasquet's career stellar, but he's been top 8.

That´s true... BTW Popyrin is in SF of 15K ITF in Poland...

That makes it a 20 match winning streak.. is he on fire or what...

What the fuck?

Not when he's had a better career than any Australian that debuted this century. Gurl please..
