A couple questions on TMC alternates

How do they work actually, is it as straightforward as the 9-16 ranked ATP players of the year?

And as for actual players who could be alternates. Could Blake and/or Ginepri become alternates for Shanghai this year, maybe 1 even making the Top 8 outright?

Normally the alternate player is the highest ranked player who is not a direct entry to the Masters Cup (next: 2nd highest ranked player, ...)

Yes, I believe mathematically one of them could still make the top 8 outright (if they win virtually everything that is left for the season).
Has an alternate ever won the Masters ? That would be fun...
Last year, Andre would have been the alternate, but turned it down, so Canas went in his stead. The alternate gets like $50,000 just for showing up, plus more if they actually appear in any matches.
