No male player in history has ever won the US Open on hard courts (1978-present) without dropping a set.

It was done once when the US National Championships tournament was played on grass at Forest Hills by lefty Neale Fraser in 1960 winning 21 sets with a games won percentage of 69.6% [139-59] (pre-tiebreaker).

Predict which men's Quarterfinalist will lose the fewest sets before the QF, and the number of sets lost. If there is a tie among the player and sets lost, highest % of games won will determine the winner. So also pick the percentage of total games won from total games played.

Player - #Sets Lost - Games Won %

For example:

Tsitsipas - 1 set lost - 71%

Good luck!

What is the significance of "before the quarterfinal"?

Don't think that matters as much for top 5/top 10 players.
Last year Nadal was dropping sets to Taro Daniel et al, but played much better in the latter rounds.
In 2014/15, we saw Federer breeze through early rounds only to falter against Novak.

Least games/sets lost in the tournament might mean something.

Significance? Aside from it's just a game where I set the conditions, it's about which player you think has the best chances to sail through the opening 4 rounds dropping the least number of sets.

I decided on Quarterfinalists to make the pool of players bigger (8), instead of trying to have to guess only the winner, 2 finalists, or 4 semifinalists.

Only Quarter finalists are eligible. Obviously we don't want to compare players that lost earlier.

Always questioning, eh? :)

Novak Djokovic - 0 sets lost - 76%
That's quite audacious - it means he can only drop 23 games in 12 sets (72 games won, 23 lost is ~76%) or less than 2 games per set. If he even wins one match 6-4 6-4 6-3, he'll have to triple bagel his next opponent :grin2:

My guesses:
Juan Martin Del Potro - 0 sets lost, 70%
Rafael Nadal - 0 sets lost, 68%
Roger Federer - 1 set lost, 68%
Novak Djokovic - 1 set lost, 64%
Kevin Anderson - 1 set lost, 59%
David Goffin - 8 sets lost, 49% :D

Thanks to all for playing.

Actually, predicting multiple players as above is not a bad idea nor discouraged. If nothing else, it can provoke discussion.

But only your top answer will count for the official challenge. But, since I am merciful as well as fair, I'll consider a replacement if your top pick is forced to retire or withdraw. However, if a loss is due to some other external factors, it will be a difficult sell. ;)
