The men’s and women’s champions at the US Open this year will earn a massive $3m apiece, it was announced on Wednesday by the USTA.

The total prize money for the tournament will be $38.3m which is an increase of 11.7 percent from $34.3 million last year.

Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams, last year’s singles champions picked up $2.6m. This year the runners up in the final will get $1.45m, an increase from $1.3m.

The US Open is boasting the largest pay-out in the tournament’s history, and they have plans to increase it still further.

Dave Haggerty USTA chairman and president said: "Last year to recognize the importance of the players and the key role they have in building our sport, the USTA shared our vision to reach 50million US dollars in prize money at the US Open by 2017.
"This year's prize money increase continues the commitment to make the US Open one of the most lucrative purses in all of sports."
