Nadal: 50% 2/4: Doha, Rio. Lost AO and Miami.
Djokovic: 100% 2/2: IWs and Miami.
Wawrinka: 100% 3/3: Chennai, AO and MC.
Federer: 25% 1/4: Dubai. Lost Brisbane, IWs and MC.

That's very poor from Federer. Why is he doing so bad in finals?

It's probably all mental. After a horrible 2013 he probably wants it too much and the nerves get in the way. He could have won both IW and MC. He'll probably never get better opportunities to win matches of that magnitude again. He never had to face Rafa and he still lost. You can expect him to be drawn against Rafa in up coming tournaments/slams and so he can write those off as well. You gotta take your opportunities.

Brisbane was inexcusable though. Who loses to Hewitt in 2014?

Fed hasn't been doing bad, apart from the Hewitt match. In IW and MC, Fed did what he could, Djokovic and Wawrinka were just better, especially in the key points. Simple as that.

Too many close losses in finals since 2012 Wimbledon and I pick out one match - Olympic final v Murray, he lost so easily and seemed too contented. Ever since then he's not been the same, less ruthless or hungry or something.
think of the losing finals to his friends, Haas in Halle, Hewitt in Brisbane, those 2 finals in Basel to Del Potro and Stan yesterday - All 3 set losses and at the end he seemed not angry at all. 3 of these finals he was a tie break from winning but played 3 awful tie breaks and he has an awful record in his career of losing tie break deciding finals, something like 1-7

Federer is an overrated mental midget. Completely faded in the IW 3rd set tiebreak, and let Wawrinka dictate play yesterday in the final set. He needs to know that he can no longer outrally these top guys; he needs to play with variety (e.g. going to the net). Sure Wawrinka was hitting very well in the last set, but it was partially because Federer placed the ball right in his strike zone.

Hewitt match possibly charity from Frienderer.

The other two losses his opposition was simply better, he got lucky draws to even reach the finals in the first place.

He never played the Hewitt match..like he didn't even wanted to win that one.
In IW and MC he just got outplayed in the end because he couldn't sustain a high level of tennis during the third set.

That's what happens when you're 32 years old, you can't really compare Nadal/Djokovic/Wawrinka because they are all in their peak years.

Don't agree on IWs and MC. He just didn't continue with the right tactics. In MC after the horrible tiebreak, he just rallied from the baseline and forgot his net game! Watch the first set, he gave no rythem to Stan. Very different in the 3rd.

And why is he losing tiebreaks. Tiebreaks were always his speciality even against the best of servers. He had the best tiebreak record ever.

In MC he lost the first point in the TB with a UE, and from there on Stan played every service point perfectly. He left Fed 0 chances in that TB. Fed on his part played everything perfectly as wellafter that 1st point, that's how high the level was in that TB, one UE and you're done.

As for the 3rd set, Fed has mental lapses lately and they're not small ones. He had one in the 3rd set TB with Nole where he just did not play and he had the same happen in the start of the 3rd against Wawa. The first set vs Tsonga also comes to mind so it's not only finals... These lapses make it very clear that he's just not 100% there. Maybe it's Mirka or maybe something else, but he's just not there for parts of every match.

I think this is reading too much into it. He made 4 finals...that is the big and important news for the year. He has also played good tie-breaks for most of the year and been so much more clutch than last year.

Disregard the early season donation to Hewitt...and you have 1 from 3 against the top 3 in finals, all contested well over 3 sets. Can't win them all for ever.

Imo, Fed's sights are very much on 2nd half of 2014....then we gonna see what's going on.

Since 2008 During the first three service games of Federer in deciding Set, the no of times he gets broken has increased proportionally so much so that last year it was 100%.

meaning every match Federer plays which goes into deciding Set he gets broken during the first 3 service games...

conclusion : More and more Mental lapses as you get older...

Federer should just be pleased he made 4 finals, remember this time last year Federer hadn't made any!
Nope! It was better if he made only 2 finals and won them. Just getting to finals is no good.

Federer is the ultimate winner and knows this. He was called: the guy who never loses on a Sunday!

It's quite simple really, saving and converting BP's. He's struggled to do both more and more over the years. In the SF he failed to convert 15 BP's in a row. That would have been unheard of a few years ago.

Fatigue, both mental and physical are also a factor.

This.

Fed has been winning slams since 2003 and has NEVER missed even a single grand slam till date. After all these years of grind his body just gives up. That being said that IW final against Novak was quite close Fed just played a terrible tb and should have won the match imo. Also he could have closed it out against Stan n the 2nd set TB. After that Stan was just too solid and Fe3d lost his steam.

So would you rather Federer had won Brisbane and Dubai finals but didn't make IW final or Monte Carlo, rather than what he has achieved this year?

He gets nervous in finals these days. He had a shot in IW but played a horrible TB.

And the Hewitt match was hopeless.
