1984 was McEnroe's best year on the tennis tour, as he compiled an 82–3 record[4] and won a career-high 13 singles tournaments, including Wimbledon and the US Open. He also was on the winning US World Team Cup and runner-up Davis Cup teams.

And

In 2006, Federer won three Grand Slam singles titles and reached the final of the other, with the only loss coming against Nadal in the French Open, 6–1, 1–6, 4–6, 6–7. This was the two men's first meeting in a Grand Slam final.[49] Federer defeated Nadal in the Wimbledon Championships final, 6–0, 7–6, 6–7, 6–3, which was the start of their storied rivalry. In the Australian Open, Federer defeated Marcos Baghdatis, 5–7, 7–5, 6–0, 6–2,[49] and at the US Open, Federer defeated Roddick (2003 champion), 6–2, 4–6, 7–5, 6–1.[49] In addition, Federer made it to six ATP Masters Series 1000 finals, winning four on hard surfaces and losing two on clay to Nadal. Federer won one ATP 500 series event in Tokyo and captured the year-end championships for the third time in his career.

Mcenroe would have won Australian Open so it gets very, very close. Federer lost almost only to Nadal on clay, which all players in history except maybe Borg would have done that year. 92-5 against 82-3, number of titles 12-13, both won master cup....

Impossible, both years are simply exceptional. Except the Lendl match, Mcenroe had two bad losses to Henrik Sundstrom and Vijay Amritraj while Federer only lost to Nadal and a bad loss against teenage Murray. Minor detail ofcourse.

Beating Connors in Wimbledon final is very much like beating Nadal in WImbledon. Beating Connors-Lendl in Usopen however is above beating Davydenko-Roddick in Usopen. Mcenroe did have Lendl and Connors, to some extent Wilander aswell while Federer had Nadal and Roddick. Definetly thougher era for Mcenroe.

So I would have to go with Mcenroe 1984.
