He's still on the entry list of Estoril, he should play there.
I haven't seen any news lately.

There was just a hint on the "Grand Chelem" blog the other day, the way Gael was practicing in Monte Carlo was apparently unbelievable, but I'm still waiting for more explanations, they said they would tell more later...

Gael has a tough quarter in Estoril:

4 Gonzalez v Mathieu
Kunitsyn v Sousa
Horna v Querrey
Monaco v Monfils 8

Default Re: Clay court season 2007

The article in L’Équipe about his match in Estoril:
Quote:

DOMINIQUE BONNOT
I don’t have time to translate it now, but he’s fine physically, Wenty, don’t worry about that. It's more a confidence issue. He can't really explain himself what is going on.
He won’t play Hamburg, he will try to play a Challenger to win a few matches. And he still needs 2 withdrawals to enter the main draw in Rome since he didn’t enter the qualies.

Default Re: Clay court season 2007

OK, here's a rough summary of the article, although it doesn't really say anything new. The whole article is about the fact that PHM is on his way up in the rankings while Gael is going down.
About his match: a good crowd, the other French players were there too and curious to see how he was doing. He started well, hit an advertisement board and was limping a little bit after that, but managed to get a 5-2 lead. But then he won only 3 points in the 5 following games: "7 mishits and 12 UE", Delaitre explains, a little bit helpless. It looked better when he won the second set 6-1, but he lost his serve 4 times in the 3rd set, which was fatal.
"I can't really explain... I don't know... I don't have much confidence". Journalists ask him to explain what is going on: "I have no clue. I'm disgusted, that's it."
The prospect of another drop down in the rankings seems to scare him, although he doesn't want to admit it: "I'll lose spots in the rankings, and that's it. C'est la vie [I don't know how to say "la roue tourne" ... "The wheel of fortune turns"?] You never know: when I came to Rome last year, I hadn't won a match, like this year [actually, he had won 2 matches, one in Barcelona, one in Estoril]. And I made it to the semi-final, so..."
That's the point: since he made the semi-final in Rom last year, he might be around #80 in the rankings in 2 weeks. He isn't even sure to be in the main draw in Rome yet. And he has already decided to skip Hamburg to play a Challenger (doesn't know which one) "to try to win a few matches in a row", Delaître says. After that, RG: "Maybe with my family watching me in the stands, you never know, I might 'catch fire'. But right now, I'm a bit gutted, I'm sick of it..." (that's not really what he says, but I can't translate his slang, as usual.)
What can we tell him at the moment? "Nothing, to take heart, I don't know... Actually, if I drop down in the rankings, I'll come back stronger! To go down can only help me."
At the same time, PHM was beating a top 10 player for the 4th time this year and says it's a matter of confidence: "Players feel that kind of things. He [Gonzo] has no confidence, I'm confident. The conditions were tough and I was stronger in my mind."
That's why PHM isn't worried for Gael: "Maybe he will end the year at #20 and everybody will praise him!" Champion (PHM's coach and Gael's coach until last year) isn't worried either: "He just started to work in a certain way with Olivier (Delaitre). You have to give them some time."
Same for Gasquet: "Gael really isn't feeling well, that's obvious. But I'm not worried. In tennis, a lot of things happen in the head, but it's also a technical problem. You can lose your "assets" very quickly. It's a matter of constant work. If he doesn't give up, he will bounce back..."
Delaître is circumspect and expects more constancy from Gael: "He fights well, but there always is a little thing which... Gael, right now, is like crystal."
And the article ends up with a wonderful comparison "Gael = crystal / PHM = the stuff the champions are made of".

As expected Gael is out of Hamburg, so do we know which challenger he will play that week?
Edit: Apparently he asked for a WC into the Zagreb challenger...

Default Re: Clay court season 2007

Quote:

http://www.eurosport.fr/tennis/rome-...o1174223.shtml

It says he looked physically sharp, no antics yesterday, he put up a good show ( - they showed the 2nd set on atpmastersseries.tv and it looked terrible, but that's what the "article" says), but he didn't have enough "punch" to win. Blake was making a lot of errors in the first set and Gael took the lead 4-1. But his first serve wasn't regular enough, he was playing too carefully and was dominated as soon as Blake started playing faster. He couldn't take his 3 SP and kind of crumbled from then on.
He says again he's lacking confidence and is in a real mess since he will now be ranked around #80. He has to change something, but he doesn't know what. Maybe the racket, but not the coach, everything is fine with Olivier.

(I can't believe people already think of a possible coach change - I guess that's why he says that at the end -, he got so much crap when he was without a coach after the story with Gautier...)
