I am sure he had a serious problem, nobody plays like that deliberatly and just retires. He will be back better.

The first time I get to watch an entire Monfils match and he retires injured. I guess I'm just not meant to see him play.

I hope he's okay and recovers for the next tourney.

In L'Équipe:

He says he got injured by warming up. It was impossible for him to sprint, to "bounce" (my English sucks, but I hope you get the idea) and it was very frustrating since chasing all the balls is his strength on clay, so he preferred to retire and not to risk anything. He'll probably have to take a break for about 10 days and it might be too short for Barcelona.
He felt well before the tournament, he trained well with Delaitre in Sophia-Antipolis, they had managed to stabilize his game (his game was "less crazy", he says).

Thanks Truc. Damn, if he hadnt injured himself during his warm-up, he would've had this match in the bag easily.

Well, I do believe something was hampering him and preventing him from playing his game, people who seem to say in GM his real level was exposed during 8 games are just embarrassing themselves, but it wasn't normal his display was so poor, it's still shocking he couldn't play the ball in the court because of an elongation.
He says it's because everything for him was based on fighting and chasing all the balls. When he felt he wasn't able to do that, he was lost. But it was shockingly poor though.
At least he has a coach now who can analyze with him what happened. I would feel awful if he was alone after such a "performance".

Here's a short video of his press conference (some journalists laugh when he says he came to "show great fights"):

In L'Équipe today:
Quote:

» – F. Ra.

He injured while practicing in the morning. He says he was feeling like "electricity" each time he was trying to run and preferred not to take any risk.
Delaitre talks about their training in Sophia-A., they worked hard on his condition because he had lost too much in that regard since the beginning of the year. Everything was going in the right direction, Gael had more energy. This little injury is unfortunate and comes at the wrong time. It's like a F1 car, he says, the motor broke, the engineers did their job properly, but they don't know what happened. Maybe it was due to too much nervosity and tension.
Gael will have to stop 10 days, which is annoying since he needed to play a lot of tournaments like Barcelona to get back his form before defending his points in Rom and RG. Gael says he's not worried yet. #42 is not that ugly, but he knows things are going to be difficult in a few weeks...

Quote:
Q. What happened to you?
GAEL MONFILS: I pulled a muscle when warming up. I didn't believe it was a serious injury so I went to the match, but I just couldn't take off.

Q. Is it your right thigh?
GAEL MONFILS: It's hamstring of my right leg. It happened while warming up when I started to run to get a dropshot. I felt a pull. I tried to stretch. I thought it would be okay, but, in fact, it was impossible for me to run. Each time I felt like an electric shock.

Q. Were there any warnings before that particular warming up?
GAEL MONFILS: No. I had a little pain in my back, but otherwise I prepared myself very well.

Q. How long will it take now?
GAEL MONFILS: I had an ultrasound and they said ten days. It's going to be difficult for me to play in Barcelona. When I get back I would talk with Dr. Montalban to see if I can go to Barcelona, but it seems difficult.

Q. Did you make the decision to stop because you didn't want to take the risk of getting hurt even more?
GAEL MONFILS: Yes. And also because my strength is that I run very well. Now out of eight games I only scored seven points because I just couldn't run at all. It was very frustrating, and on top of it I was running the risk to hurt myself even more badly. He played two dropshots and I couldn't go get them because it was hurting too much. I didn't want to take anymore risks.

Q. Did you practice in Luxembourg?
GAEL MONFILS: No, in Sofia Antipolis. I had a good ten days tennis there. I had good feelings with my tennis, and physically also. And now I am totally disgusted.

Q. Do you have projects for your game?
GAEL MONFILS: I want to play solid from the baseline and give away nothing. I had managed to play being a lot more calm, less crazy, with much more consistency. Now I will to have wait the next tournament to put it into place.
