Which players have ended their careers ona good note?

Sampras ended his career in a tremendous wa, by beating his biggest rival, Andre, in the final of his Home Slam, The U.S Open.

On the flip side, Andre ended his career with a third round exit, at the same tournament, to an unknown journeyman.

Edberg retired with style. I've always thought it's a clichee that one should retire when on top of his game. Agassi also retired tremendously.

I don't think Andre and Pete had the same goals. Pete wanted to leave winning a slam, he definitly could have had several more years of playing - he retired young - he just didn't want to risk declining, and looking back it was a smart desicion, considering how little time it to took Roger to start dominate after Pete's retirement.

Andre just wanted to play the game until he just couldn't play anymore ,and I think in the US open he was a little bit beyond THAT, even. Getting shots to deal with his back. He loved Tennis, he wanted to keep doing that, period.

Pete needed a break from it all, Andre would have gone on a few more years had his back allowed him.

What Sampras did was phenomenal, I don´t think there are too many players who have retired like that. I suppose very few players even think about retiring, if they are still in good enough form to win grand slams.
As for Agassi, I think he went out in style. Okay, he lost in the 3rd round, but that´s why it was time to retire. BUt despite his 3rd round exit, it was still very classy.

I don´t think there was anything exceptionally stylish about Edberg´s retirement...He just retired, like everyone else. Classy guy, though.

Normally it is unusual to end in style because if somebody just won a GS they would usually think ... hmm ... maybe I can win some more. You usually retire when you know your best tennis days are way behind of you.

It would be interesting to hear, why you think Edberg´s retirement was classy? If I remember correctly, he just played a "farewell year", pretty low key, and his results were barely worth mentioning. I really don´t think there´s anything too special about that.

I don't think that Andre's exit was that bad to be honest. He retired when his body couldn't take it any more, and in his home grand slam. Admittedly I would have preferred him to beat Becker and lose to Roddick in the 4th round instead, as at least then his final match would have been against a quality opponent. But still he bowed out of the a game in a pretty good manner.
