The Surbiton Trophy
29 May - 6 June 2004
British number two Greg Rusedski opens his grass court season this week with an opening round match in The Surbiton Trophy event against Australian youngster Todd Reid.
It’s a repeat of the pairs’ only previous meeting in 2003 when Rusedski had to come from a set down to win 4-6; 6-2; 6-1 on his way to the semi finals in Nottingham.
Rusedski is seeded four for the Surbiton event behind Ivo Karlovic, Karol Beck and Yen-Hsun Lu of Chinese Taipei.
At the top of the draw giant Croatian Ivo Karlovic lines up against Sweden’s Thomas Johansson the 2002 Australian Open Champion and a player who reached a career best ranking of seven before injury ruled him out for the whole of the 2003 season.
Among the British interests youngster Alex Bogdanivic would appear to have the toughest draw - a meeting with second seed Karol Beck of Slovakia who is ranked 159 places higher than the Middlesex player. It’s ladies day at Surbiton tomorrow (Monday 31st) with eight singles matches scheduled along with four doubles.
The men’s main draw gets underway on Tuesday June 1st.
