That's what I thought too, but he says now he'd like to play.

(...)

Now he wants to play I still think Seb is not good enough at the moment to stand a chance on clay against the russians.
Merci pour l'article Françoise.

Monfils is a big match player, and is better on clay than all the other Frenchman, besides Richard Gasquet maybe.

Probably soon, considering most other countries have announced their lineups. Maybe he is waiting to see the results for the Frenchmen in Miami, which aren't to spiffy right now.

5, maybe 6 Frenchmen in the 3rd round, I don't think that's too bad considering some of their rankings The biggest disappointment unfortunately was Gael.

Just thought how much would be changed if Santoro was back to the team… His unique experiences of playing against Safin, his game in doubles… A great pity.
So now, bring France the glory, Paulo

I agree about Fab, but we know that's not going to happen because of Forget
But anyway I'm not sure Safin will play singles this time with the form Youzhny has been in, and of course Davydenko being a good clay player, so there's even less of a chance he'd be lined up if Fab was playing. Though his experience in doubles would have been a huge boost.

Gasquet : can win his two rubbers and I wouldn't be surprised if he does so.

Mathieu : Presently the best choice because he is healthy. Problem is that his game doesn't match up with most of the russians, especially Davydenko. But he has his chances against the current Safin.

Grosjean : The puzzler. Rarely been a good DC player, and isn't as sharp as before. Plus one more loss and he is Safin's pidgeon. That said, at his best, he's better than any other french number 2...

Benneteau : I'd really like him to be in the team. Not that he's an upper talent, but he deserves to play the doubles at least and can compete in singles in case others are injured.

Clément : In another slump. Hope Forget will dare to not pick him.

Llodra : some issues about him since his last DC match. Though a Benneteau-Llodra combo could be very interesting (right-handed/lefty, one with good serves/one with good ROS). Pity they haven't give it a try previously.

Simon : Too much up and down currently. But the funny thing is that I believe he could cope with Davydenko and Safin better than others given their relatively flat games.

Maybe.
Plus don't forget Gael has a flawless record against both Davydenko and Safin. I think it's a no-brainer.
