Default 2007 Davis Cup Quarterfinal - Russia def France 3-2

Team selection this time round will be very interesting, consdering Grosjean is apparently skipping DC for Houston...

Personally, I think he's going to stick with Gasquet, Clement and Llodra. Picking a fourth (and maybe fifth) player will be a headache. PHM is one of the better French players on clay and has DC experience but he freezes up when he plays against a Russian. Monfils did well on clay last year but he has been slumping and he does not have DC experience.

I don't want to be in his skin. The forth player is a nightmare to pick. I would advise to do a "Tarpishev", let's say announce Benneteau and change to Monfils one hour before the match starts or the other way round.

But whoever is the forth aplayer and assuming that the doubles recovers from its romanian nightmare, the burden of this tie is on Gasquet. Time for "something big" - again. He'd better start learning how to do it, today!

Not possible. He can only switch among the four players he picks.

Forget's paying the price now for not selecting Monfils in the previous tie. He would have at least been able to judge how Gael responds to playing DC which would have made this decision easier. I think PHM and Benneteau should be the fourth and fifth players (Monfils is in horrid form) but which one for which position I don't know.

Regarding Richard, like someone on RG.net said, the only way they're going to win this tie is if Richard wins his two rubbers and the doubles team wins theirs which will take a miracle.

Thumbs up Re: DC: Who should Forget select for the tie against Russia (on clay)?

Singles: Richard Gasquet and Richard Gasquet ( He is the one who is reliable,I don't even know who is the second choice! Maybe they should pick Julien Benneteau! )
Doubles: Arnaud Clément and Michael Llodra (100% sure must pick and I think they will win this rubber!)

I agree, and I always have. Besides, Monfils is unpredictable and certainly able to get a kick out of a DC tie which makes him even more unpredictable.

Stranger things have happened, though.

I would say Paulo and Julien (my 2 favs French players) added to Richard, Arnaud and Mika but I won't be home for this week-end and so I wont be able to see the tie...

I'm so looking forward to this.

Well, Richard is the obvious choice because there's simply no better choice for Forget Mika-Arnaud is the best team he has since Fabrice is no longer exist for him

If I could cut Paulo's head off and replace it with Seb or someone else... that would be nice. Anyway, if Safin is playing... I'll pick Paulo.

I really think France can win the tie if...
France: Richard, Paulo , Mika, Arnaud
Russia: Safin or Dima , i-don't-care-about-the-rest

Forget was already hinting at Paulo in interviews during the first tie when Paulo hadn't won a match for ages. Now that he is showing some good tennis again, it's a no brainer.
He will choose Richie, Paulo, Arnaud & Mika, I'm just not too sure about the 5th player.

I know it's risky but I would try another double team like Benneteau/Santoro.
Ok, Santoro and Bennet are not very used to playing together in doubles but in case Paulo is not fit to play a 5th rubber for example (remember the dc tie in 2005 ) Bennet or Santoro could be more dangerous in singles than Clément or Llodra but that's just my opinion

And I didn't mention the horrible performance of Llodra/Clément against Romania..

The 5th player would be Monfils or Simon. I agree with Silverwhite that if a 5th player had been in the group for the 1st round, Forget would have more choices today.

I don't like the idea of selecting Sébastien Grosjean on clay and Gaël (if he keeps slumping and well, Forget should have tried him in DC but he didn't so add to that his unexperience)...

Richard for sure, then Paulo if he keeps showing he's coming back, Santoro hopefully and maybe Benneteau (well, he's reached the QF in RG so he's not that bad on clay... and he's a good doubles player).

Paulo has a phobia of Russians

Llodra/Clément just lost to Lindstedt/Nieminen 6-4 6-2. I know those two upset the Bryans, but still...

Benneteau/Santoro would be a little odd (don't think they have played together). Llodra/Santoro though would be great. They won the AO, TMC and other tournaments together. Forget should just eat humble pie and forget his biases and pick Fabrice.

arnaud's form and even motivation is rather suspect right now... if seb isn't playing he shouldn't be either. though personally it would be a bigger blow to him, cos he loves dc.

but france needs a new look team, it might as well be now. bring on the new guys, i'd say.

Agreed.

It should have been against Romania, so Forget would have had a better picture of who to select for this tie...

I agree but well Benneteau is a better singles player. However it's very likely that they would both lose a singles match in this tie if they had to play it anyway...
