Allez Fabrice He's the last seeded entry for Madrid. Will he play?

He lost both matches, but he explains in L'Équipe today he had planned to take a break this week. The ATP called him on Friday evening to tell him he was entering the main draw, so he decided to come, but he wasn't really into it. He says he should be more motivated for Lyon and Bercy.

And the big news: he'll play another full season, it's sure now.

Does it work when I post the page with the interview as a pdf-attachment, can you download it and open it?

Default Re: Come & cheer for Fab on the Tour

It's mainly about his decision to keep playing. He explains the last weeks gave him the answer to a few important questions in that regard: the fact that he was still able to fight against Blake and his semi-final in Mumbai in difficult conditions, when it was a real effort for him to go there. His main concern was his motivation, not his level of game. If he keeps playing, he wants to play a full season even though he will have, of course, a lighter schedule to spend as much time as possible with his daughter. He will barely play in April-May, for example. He'll play a full season on grass, but not much on hard except the USO and maybe the Olympics. And he should play the indoors tournaments.
He's still looking for a coach, but should make a decision very soon. He still needs somebody to help him, for example to control his ball toss on serve. He also has a "challenge" for next year: he won't be allowed to play more than 3 sliced FH in a row. He knows he annoys his opponents a lot with this shot, but he has to run too much when he plays like that. So he'd like to change it.
He's very close to Richie and that was a factor too. He isn't his coach at all, but they talked about it with Deblicker when he was wondering if he was going to retire, and he likes being on the tour with them and giving them some pieces of advice when they ask him for help - even if it ends up with Richie spanking him 6-0 6-3 like in Mumbai.

Perfectly, thanks. He is not the only one who "plays" tennis, but he is right, there are many who "work" it. Strangely enough, Fabrice does better against the "workers" than against the "players".

Yep, that's a point he mentions when he is asked about the reasons for his longevity. The fact that he "plays" tennis while other players are more "tennis workers".

I just gave a rough summary of a few parts, he says other things in the interview, a real translation would have been better... The journalist asks him for example if his decision also depended on his other options for next year. At one time, he seemed to have an interesting "job offer" for next year which made him think about a possible retirement (I have no idea what the journalist is referring to here). Fab says that was not important, he already has some ideas for the time when he will retire, but he simply feels too competitive (#46 in singles and #10 in doubles) to retire now.

And he insists a lot on how he likes to help young players on the tour with his different perspective as a player – I hope Gaël asks him for help too, he doesn't mention him, only Richie... Since he plays against them, he sees other things about their game a coach can not see (and he isn't afraid to share his thoughts, even if it means he's going to lose like in Mumbai).

I just took this point up, because I think similarly, I even use the same words sometimes, distinguishing between tennis "players" and "workers", "runners" and "shouters" on the other side. No names given.

Are you sure that Roddick will come? I have my doubts. Now that he is qualified, he might skip the European tourneys and focus on Shanghai and DC. Just a theory, though, I have no sources.

I don't know, I've read somewhere he will get a late start on Wednesday, so I guess he will really play.

An interview of Fab in Le Progrès. Nothing new though. He talks again about his decision to keep playing in 2008 - "a tough decision to make".
He's fine with his draw, he likes this kind of matches.

Poor Andy had Fabrice in the first round.

I'm having a hard time finding any news or photos from this match but there is this short video on the Lyon site that shows Fabrice's diving stab volley at the end.

Yes, the matchpoint was awesome.

He got injured during his match yesterday right at the beginning of the match (thigh injury), he said after the match he was hoping it wouldn't be too serious, but I see he has retired in doubles today.
I hope he will be fine for Bercy.

I'm not a specialist, but he won't qualify anyway, they're ranked out of the top 8 and won't play together anymore, so they can't improve their ranking. Plus Clément-Llodra will qualify as GS winners although they are ranked behind them, so Fabrice won't play at the TMC.
(I even doubt they would go if they were qualified as a team, honestly, looks like they've really completely parted ways.)

He's playing with Knowles next week in Bercy, but I think that's just for one tournament again, I don't know if there is anything new in that regard. He never talked about doubles in the recent interviews about the 2008 season.

His leg was heavily strapped today, I was scared when I saw him, not used to see Fab injured!

In his audio interview here: http://www.fft.fr/bnpparibasmasters/2007/?id=3121, he doesn't mention his leg at all, I don't know how much it hampers him (he had a pretty rough start today). He says he hated Bercy at the beginning of his career, the venue, the people... And now he loves it and he's really looking forward to his match against Djoko tomorrow. He likes him, he's a very nice guy. The crowd loves players who are a bit different and so is Djoko.

The impressive strapping:
