Chucho's best friend Martin Vassallo Arguello doesn't have a specific thread either day, so today would be a good day to start one.

Temperley's other tennis player finished inside the top 100 for 2006 and hope he can consolidate and finish in the top 100 again.

There´s an interview to Martín in the "Fuera de juego" (something like 'Out of the game') section in Olé. It´s not about tennis, it´s about his experience in Chile during Pinochet´s death and some of his political ideas. I have no intention to start a political discussion, but I thought it gives you an idea of who MVA is

Martín Vassallo Argüello, aquel tenista que descubrió un mundo nuevo al llegar a octavos de Roland Garros 2006, el que estampó el "Hasta la victoria siempre" en una cámara de TV y reivindicó al Che Guevara, fue testigo de un momento histórico. No es una final de Grand Slam, o algún tiro raro que haya inventado Federer. Trasciende el tenis. Estuvo en Chile al momento de la muerte del dictador Augusto Pinochet y, más que ser espectador, decidió participar de las repercusiones.

"Hace dos años que estoy de novio con una chilena, Ana, y en noviembre del 2005 empecé a entrenar con Horacio de la Peña allá", cuenta el tenista. El 10 de diciembre pasado, la pareja fue a un bar de Santiago para seguir a Boca contra Lanús...

—Y daban otra cosa...

—Sí, obvio, todos con la muerte de Pinochet. Mi novia vive cerca de donde se hicieron los actos de conmemoración y de repudio, así que veía mucho el movimiento. Es una persona que dividió al país en dos.

—¿Asististe a algún acto?

—El falleció por la tarde y de noche su cuerpo iba a estar en el Hospital Militar. Ahí fuimos con Ana, yo con una cámara nueva que quería probar. La derecha de Chile estaba ahí, la esposa, políticos allegados... Al mismo tiempo, en Plaza Italia, festejaba la izquierda. Primero estuvimos una hora y media en el Hospital Militar, eran 500 personas.

—¿Intentaste entrar?

—Me hice pasar por prensa con la cámara, llegué hasta la puerta, vi salir a la mujer, a generales, al hijo... Ahí le preguntaba a la gente qué le dio Pinochet, que le había sacado a Allende, porque reaparece su figura también. Después fuimos a la Plaza y también charlé.

—¿Cómo te sentías en el Hospital? ¿Cuestionabas lo que te decían?

—No, porque no tenía intención de discutir, sólo saber qué tienen en la cabeza. Uno a veces se cierra en la propia idea y no entiende qué piensa el otro. Un tipo que había hecho una fortuna, la estatizó Allende, a él lo odia y a Pinochet lo tiene ahí arriba. De hecho decían que Pinochet era el Salvador. El tipo que dice eso está muy lejos de mis ideas, pero me gusta escucharlo. El que odiaba levantarse con 12 años a las 5 de la mañana para recibir la ración... Tienen historias que hacen que a Allende lo vean como un demonio.

—El privilegio es siempre por temas económicos por sobre las desapariciones o torturas.

—Habría tenido mil argumentos para discutir. Lo que decían era, por lo menos, egoísta. Allá muchos piensan: algo habrán hecho, no eran desaparecidos, la influencia marxista, a mí no me desaparecieron amigos. La historia se repite, es un patrón de pensamiento.

—¿Y qué viste en la Plaza?

—Muchos jóvenes, la nueva izquierda, los que participan hoy de la política. Mucha batucada, artistas, mimos, se armó una feria ahí.

Vassallo Argüello destaca una de las mayores consecuencias: el tema nuevamente en la discusión pública. "Reflotó las pasiones, se generaron debates, discusiones. Allá, el asunto está enterrado. Vas a una librería y prácticamente no hay libros de la época. Acá encontrás de Montoneros, del ERP. Las Madres y Abuelas de Plaza de Mayo, HIJOS, siempre remueven el pasado y no encontrarán paz hasta que caiga el último general".

—¿Qué te pareció la experiencia?

—Absolutamente movilizadora. No es que lo estaba leyendo en un diario, le podía preguntar a una señora que sostenía la foto de Pinochet por qué estaba ahí y a una aborigen que había estado 15 años presa por integrar un movimiento similar al de los Sin Tierra en Brasil cómo había sufrido. Haber sido partícipe, no lo olvidaré más.

Thanks for that and he seems to be quite an intelligent guy as well and I remember what he wrote on the camera after he beat Sluiter or was it Grosjean?

I don't think he will progress in the event, but he has Acapulco next week.
