El de hoy será mi último contacto. ¡Espero que les resulte el mejor!

Fuimos a la mezquita Hassan II con José Acasuso, acompañados por la televisión local. Es impactante ver semejante construcción, para colmo está ubicada al lado del mar, lo que significa un contraste que impacta. Hay una especie de pabellón para las misas, que medirá como una cancha de fútbol. Entra muchísima gente rezando allí.

Nos divertimos un rato con Chucho porque, claro, él era la figura de la entrevista. Y cada cinco minutos le preguntaban de todo: qué le parecía el mercado, la mezquita y más. Detrás de cámara le hacíamos señas para que se tentara. “¡Paren, que no puedo contestar la pregunta, por favor!”, terminó suplicando. Después se vengó, y miren que pensé que no iba a poder. Yo soy bastante bueno en eso, me puedo quedar serio si quiero. Pero cuando me preguntaron qué pensaba de la mezquita, me hizo una mueca muy osada, y me terminé riendo. No pude aguantar.

Nos compramos telas, tapices, ya no tenemos espacio en los bolsos. ¡Quizá quede en la aduana! Cuando comienzo una gira siempre voy con bolsos livianos, casi por la mitad, con espacios. Al volver, están que explotan. Tengo que pedirles bolsos a Head o comprar alguno…

Hoy me sucedió algo increíble. Generalmente, en los ATP, nos dan pelotitas y las usamos tranquilos. En Casablanca me dieron un tubo de cuatro y nos pidieron un depósito de 20 dólares para devolverlas. Increíble. Y en los entrenamientos perdimos tres. Cuando volvimos, el encargado se sorprendió cuando le di una sola. Y le dije: “No sé, flaco, las colgué. ¿Estás bromeando? ¿Para qué me llevaría bolas usadas?”. Terminamos discutiendo a morir, hasta que una persona del torneo oyó la discusión, llegó para mediar y me pidió que anotara en el registro, al lado de mi nombre, que yo las había perdido. Entonces escribí: “I lost three balls”, y firmé. Por fin, me devolvieron el dinero. ¡Para mí que el flaco quería quedarse con los 20 dólares!

Bueno, mañana parto a Estoril. La semana próxima jugamos en Estoril y Munich, y mientras, Roger Federer y Rafael Nadal van a jugar la exhibición en superficies distintas. ¿Sabían que le gané dos veces a Nadal? Claro, él tenía ocho, nueve años, jajaja. Iba de la mano de la maestra del jardín de infantes. La primera fue en la clasificación de Mallorca, cuando él tenía 14 y había recibido una invitación. En la otra, la final del challenger de Cherbourg 2003, Rafa tenía 16.

Yo ya no era más un nene, tenía 23, y veía del otro lado a una ratita correr y pegarle como una fiera… Terminó el partido y él estaba muy deprimido. Me acerqué y le dije: “¡Tenés que estar contento igual!”. Y me respondió: “Vengo de perder dos finales seguidas. Estoy atrapado porque tengo miedo de no poder ganar las finales”. ¡Increíble!
¿Ustedes dicen que superó el miedo o no?

En el Sony Ericsson Open de Miami se acordó de eso, él solito. Estábamos cenando, hablando de él y Roger Federer, y de la nada me dice: “Vos me ganaste la final de Cherbourg”. Le contesté que sí, pero que había sido hacía mil años. “Me acuerdo, me acuerdo”, repitió. Y yo, agrandado, agregué: “Te gané otra vez en la qualy de Mallorca, no sé si recordás”. No se acordaba. “Sí, que tenías ocho años”, le dije. “Ah, ¿eras vos?”. Se ve que no le gustó mucho, si se reía un poco le bromeaba con el récord de 2-0. Porque es así: el récord oficial es Roitman 2 – Nadal 0. No hay vuelta atrás. ¡Incluso todavía puedo perder un partido y seguir arriba, jaja!
