Default Can Safin win a slam this year?

I really think so. After his performance at the Aus Open, it seems he has the experience to rise to the occasion at the most needed time. I think he honestly has the best shot for the Us Open title this year. He could also suprise and win Wimbledon. He has the game for the grass surface. He just needs some consistency and a good draw. The only other question is can Roddick and Federer defend their slam championships. If Federer had to play Nalbandian in the quarters last year at Wimby would he have made it to the final? And if he would have faced any other opponent in the final besides the hot/cold philloppoussis he probably would have at least faced some opposition. Federer has had a fairly easy final in both his grand slam wins. Both being one sided three setters. Not taking anything away at his wins, but they weren't exactly the most exciting finals I have ever seen.

I hope he can do it his year, but I think not. I know he can win another Slam, but this year might be too soon... He lacks the consistency and the self confidence right now. That's what a few tougher draws sometimes seem to do to him. But as soon as his confidence is up again, I don't see why he wouldn't win a Slam again.

As for now, he lost the first set tiebreak to Spadea... So first thing first: Marat you'd better turn this score around!

I don't think that Marat will win a Slam this year. He plays way too badly to win anything now.

Marat had a horrible 1st part of 2000 and went on to win the US Open. Anything can happen, but he needs to get his confidence going in the clay season, which I think he can. He won't lose any ranking points (he went out 2nd rd Miami last year). Stay positive, but I myself, won't be watching any of his 1st rd matches anymore right now. 2 1/2 hours to see him lose is too much :0

I think Safin has proved to be a really good player, but I honestly have to say I don't see Safin becoming world #1 any day soon.
But that doesn't change the fact that I really think Safin is one of the best on the ATP tour and that he has a place in my top10 maybe even top5, still I think an obstacle Safin has to overcome is his moodswings. He has the game to be #1 but still lacking things mentally, I think.

However I really believe that Safin is always a threat in a grandslam (any tournament for that matter) only depends on what mood he's in

He jsut seems to have a program in his brain: " Play at 90% of the opponent's power". That way he loses 7-6 7-6 to the No,1, and 7-6 7-6 to No.30. Quite a strange property he has.

Not at the rate he's playing now But he has the game to win Any of them. He has had difficulty at Wimbledon, but he certainly has the game to win there. I mean Federer fell in the 1st rd. 3 times before he won it last year!!! Safin's serve should be very hard to return on the grass, plus he has an all court game, can Serve & Volley on grass. Same at the Open. I think Federer would of still won Wimbly even if he played David, because he loves the surface, and is a very fine grass court player. I can only really see Grass court specialists giving him trouble on this surface, and David as well, but they've never played on grass so.... who knows

I don't think so. I hope so, but I doubt it. He needs to get his confidence boosted but by the way he plays, this won't happen too soon!

Bold prediction: Marat will not lose before the SFs of the next three slams, and will finish the year #3.

Marat performs way better in the majors, TF your prediction isnt so outrageous, he'll do well at the French for sure,he always does well there,Im confident he'll make the quarters or semis.
USO- if he's going to win one this year that'd be it.....although I would maybe say top 8, 3 is pushing our luck a bit

Last year, Marat wanted to win the French Open, but we all know he was injured all summer. He'll want to make up for that prediction.
