In hindsight, I think a first round loss in his first overseas tourney was acceptable. It is pretty hard to play against a different style of game.

Played well against Sela. Served for the second set and got broken unfortunately. I think at the moment his is still learning how to play on clay and over time his game will adapt to this. Clay will never be his strongest surface but hopefully with improvement he can still win on it unlike so many of the other aussies.

Brydan is in the final round of qualifying at Eastbourne, where he plays Klaasen, who is quite a good grass court player.

Good luck

Good luck Brydan! Good to see him trying to qualify for ATP 250s. He has a very good chance at qualifying here.

Default Re: Brydan Klein: Australia's Big Hope

yep great work by Brydan this week, heres hoping he can qualifying seeing as the qualifiers in round 1 all draw unseeded players except for one. he really need to gain some points soon as he has 6 points to defend this week and 42 points to defend at the end of Wimbledon.

Seeing as a qualification in an ATP tournament gives you 12 points it is likely Brydan will only have to defend 36 points at the end of Wimbledon. Unfortunately he is not playing in any other challengers between now and the end of Wimbledon so he will either have to make a good run here in Eastbourne or do well in Wimbledon qualifying.

His position is a lot like Carsten Balls in regards to ranking points, if he can continue to gain the same amount of points he gained last year he will climb the rankings due to overhaul of the ranking system this year. If Brydan keeps this up and defends all his points from last year I'm sure he will be inside the top 150 by the years end.

None the less GL in Eastbourne and Wimbledon.

Congrats to Brydan for going through qualifying, very tight match against Klaasen 6-7 7-6 7-6. lets hope he wins a match here.

in the first round he'll either face:

Ivo Minar
Teimuraz Gabashvili
Joshua Goodall
Igor Andreev

Andreev is the number one seed but I could see Brydan beating either Minar or Goodall. Lets just hope he draws one of those two.

Well done. What a fight!

I think this win means though that he can't play Wimbledon quallies, as they start tomorrow.

He drew Gabashvili and they play tomorrow.

Gabashvili seems to be playing quite well lately, so its not the easiest draw.

Great fighting spirit Brydan. I don't expect him to win this match but it is still great to see him qualify for an ATP event. Aussies don't get to many people playing at this level nowadays!

Can Klein enter a challenger for next week still, or would he have to go through Qualies? He really needs to defend some points from last year.

Brydan won 6/3 5/7 6/1

Excellent win!
Its a real shame he isn't playing the quallies at Wimbledon, I think he'd have had a chance to qualify as it seems he's playing well.

He plays Tipsarevic next.

Brydan could enter qualies in a challenger next week but it seems doubtful considering what he has done this week. He can't get a Secured Entry either because he didnt enter those challengers in the first place. Best chance would probably be to get given a wildcard.

With this first round victory there isn't as much to worry about his ranking because he gained 42 points this time last year at the end of Wimbledon and this year has he already gained 32 this week. It's two weeks later he has to worry about when he has another 34 points, 10 points the week after and then another 10 points the week after that. But if Brydan does not gain any points between now and then he will still be ranked about 210 which isn't too bad.

But then the following 2 weeks after that he has 74 points to defend so thats gonna be tough. But then he only has 38 points to defend for the rest of the year so thats not too bad. I'm really hoping he can keep his spot in the top 200.

Hopefully Tipsy keeps up his record of having a good win over a seed followed by a bad match. Good to see Klien win. I keep forgetting just how young he is only being born on the 31st Dec 1989. Hopefully he can keep progressing.

Default Re: Brydan Klein: Australia's Big Hope

Klein has been suspended for six months by the ATP...and fined more cash...it might be reduced to 4 months if he completes a Racial Sensitivity course.

stupid moron

ATP STATEMENT

Australian player Brydan Klein has been suspended from the ATP World Tour and ATP Challenger Tour tournaments for six months and fined an additional USD10,000 following a racial slur during a qualifying match on June 13, 2009 at the ATP World Tour 250 tournament in Eastbourne, England.

The penalty comes in addition to a EUR10,000 fine he was assessed on site for uttering a racial slur while playing against South African Raven Klaasen.

Under the ATP Code of Conduct, Klein was found to have committed the Player Major Offense, Aggravated Behavior. The incident was deemed to have been “behavior that is flagrant and particularly injurious to the success of a tournament or is singularly egregious.”

The determination said the use of the slur was “repugnant, and is particularly upsetting and entirely unacceptable for this to be used in a sporting event such as the ATP World Tour where equality amongst sportsmen is a predicate to fair competition and, indeed, paramount to the success of the Tour and of the Sport.”

Klein has the option of appealing the penalty or of accepting a reduced penalty option.

If he enrolls in and successfully completes a Racial Sensitivity Training course, which is acceptable to the ATP, within the first four months of the suspension the remaining two months suspension and the additional fine will be waived. The remaining two months of the suspension will be reclassified as a final probationary period, allowing him to return to the Tour.

The penalty is effective from July 20, 2009 unless he appeals the decision.
