Bryans Continue Record-Setting Pace in Madrid
Bob and Mike Bryan Oct. 21, 2007 - Top seeds and defending champions Bob and Mike Bryan won their ninth ATP Masters Series shield when they toughed out a 6-3, 7-6(4) victory over against unseeded Polish duo Mariusz Fyrstenberg and Marcin Matkowski in the final of the Mutua Madrilena Masters Madrid.
The Bryans won a career-best ninth title for the season and a fourth ATP Masters Series shield of 2007 following victories in Miami, Monte-Carlo and Hamburg. They also finished runner-up in Rome and Cincinnati this season.
Factoring in titles at Toronto and Madrid last year, the Bryans have won six of the past 12 ATP Masters Series shields. Also, they have made finals of nine of the past 13 Masters Series events.
The two-time Tennis Masters Cup winners improve to 68-9 for the year. The Americans have already clinched the Stanford ATP Doubles Race for the third straight year – and for the fourth time in the past five years.
Mike Bryan said: "We took care of our serves all week, which was important in the altitude. It feels good to come here after a three-week break and take care of business. We want to keep the momentum going and finish the year strongly in Shanghai."
Bob Bryan said: "We decided to keep it rolling by playing Basel and ride this form through Shanghai. It felt good to beat the good Polish team, who we haven't played for a few years. The rest of the year including the Davis Cup final is all indoors, so this gives us confidence for the indoor season."
