MTF Bandwagon Player of the Month
After the 2006 edition was successful, I have decided that the monthly award will continue and then we will announce the winner at the end of the season.
Dmitry Tursunov was the inaguaral winner of the MTF
Bandwagon Player of the year. Tomas Berdych won 2 monthly awards as well, but there will be plenty of bandwagons built and just as many crash over a period of time.
How it works.
This is the wonderful MTF tradition for a player all of a sudden gains a legion of fans or have a over a very short period of time, through either a big win or a big performance in an event. The multitude of threads about the same player and the usually over a very short period of time proclaiming greatness or future greatness, to winning Slams without losing a game.
Once they have gained them, then when the results to wane usually in a very short period of time then they go to the status overrated or disappear just as quickly. Yes, there are true fans of these players and they know who they are for the most part.
If they do well on faster surfaces then clowns like GWH have a dig at their lack of claycourt skills, then if they do well on clay, they are derided as claycourt specialists, even if they do well on other surfaces.
There are numerous examples of this Berdych anytime he beats Nadal, Gasquet with his flashy game gets them just as quickly as they leave, Baghdatis after the AO, Tursunov with the blog etc etc
This will be a competitive contest and besides the winners there will be some honourable mentions when the award has been close. Tursunov's effort was very special indeed, he got the yearly award for his blog and not his tennis.
In contrast to Gasquet the winner of though the 2005
Bandwagon Player of the Year was Nadal, hasn't had the bad results as of yet recently, but once the form declines then the usual comments will come out in force.
Before the awards are given out, there are some honourable mentions like Fabrice Santoro for Jan/Feb for his excellent run at the Australian Open. Gilles Simon during the April/May run of the season did well in this regard, but these are the winner.
Basically if someone new does well at the AO, then they will get the legion of fans.
History of the winners.
