Philippoussis set to withdraw from Open

Victorian Mark Philippoussis appears almost certain to withdraw from next week's Australian Open with a groin injury.

The US Open and Wimbledon finalist has been undergoing intensive treatment in Melbourne with Australia's Davis Cup physiotherapist Andrea Bisaz after tearing his groin at last week's Hopman Cup in Perth.

But having already been forced to withdraw from this week's Medibank International in Sydney with the injury, Bisaz says Philippoussis is unlikely to recover in time to take his place at Melbourne Park.

"I certainly wouldn't put money on it, but he is receiving treatment," Bisaz told the Herald Sun.

If Philippoussis does elect to play though, Australia's Davis Cup coach Wally Masur told AAP he would not be surprised to see him perform well, after he overcame injury to lead the team to the teams title in 2003.

"He's a pretty mercurial character," said Masur, who admitted Philippoussis could be selected for March's opening round Davis Cup tie against Austria in Sydney, even though he has been badly out of form.

"No one doubts what he's capable of. One thing about Mark that just sort of highlights what he's capable of is that Davis Cup final. He had a tear in his pectoral muscle."

oh well, id rather he recover properly, go back to new york and train with john MacEnroe and work on his fitness more. he's still not in top shape, could lose a couple more kilos...

if he were to play he'd lose before 4th round, drop his ranking badly and possible re-injury himself. I hope he makes the announcement soon.

he'll be back, if he's been through the hell of last yr and now this new injury and is still talking about tennis, it shows he's serious. if he wasnt he'd have given up by now.

Did you hear something about Mark playing at the exhibition tournament at River Oaks (Houston)? They said he was in the players list but I don't know if he's actually playing.

He was suppose to be, but he rolled on his ankle in the last moments of his match in Nasdaq... he should be back in a clay tournament in 2-3wks.

Mark is playing the Harrah's Mens Pro Challenger in Mississippi on May 2nd. It has also been reported he's playing the Forest Hills Challenger May 9 - 14th.

Smart move for mark, he's taking his time with his recovery and also playing challengers to help get ranking points.

Cant wait to see him back on court, no doubt he's been working hard on fitness and his game with new coach andrew florent.
