Los ingresados desde la clasificación marcan el camino argentino en el abierto francés; Vassallo Argüello es el referente; Schwank ya está en la tercera rueda

PARIS.- Definitivamente, el esfuerzo y el sacrificio están dejando una marca argentina en este Roland Garros. Ayer hubo dos hechos notorios. Primero, la contundente victoria de Diego Junqueira sobre el francés Adrian Mannarino, con la que se completó el póquer de tenistas de nuestro país que, desde la clasificación, pasaron la primera rueda del Grand Slam sobre polvo de ladrillo. Y en el último tramo de la jornada, Eduardo Schwank superó al español Marcel Granollers y se transformó en el primero de los cuatro en alcanzar la tercera rueda.

"Estoy muy contento, me queda un partido más para mi objetivo. No me pesará jugar contra Mathieu, porque vengo con confianza y físicamente me siento mejor que hace cuatro o cinco días. Tal vez me toque un estadio grande y me va a dar nervios, pero me voy a acostumbrar", dijo Schwank, de 23 años, tras ganar por 6-7 (5-7), 6-2, 6-4 y 6-4.

"Para mí, esto es como el Mundial de fútbol. Haber pasado la primera rueda de Roland Garros me dio más alegría que haber ganado el Challenger de San Remo hace dos semanas. Tal vez me dé real cuenta de todo cuando se termine", comentó Junqueira, de 27, que se impuso por 6-1, 6-2 y 6-2, ante la orgullosa presencia de sus padres, Daniel y María Julia. En cambio, Sebastián Decoud no pudo pasar de la segunda rueda: cayó ante el español Nicolás Almagro (19° favorito) por 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 y 6-1, aunque para él todo esto fue un triunfo.

Martín Vassallo Argüello fue otro de los triunfadores. Casi se podría hablar de sorpresa con su victoria sobre el zurdo español Feliciano López por 7-6 (7-1), 6-4, 3-6, 4-6 y 6-3. Lo del bonaerense es el primer ejemplo de esta serie de jugadores que desde abajo lograron llegar al alto nivel. Lejos de los top ten, es cierto, pero en el gran grupo de los que juegan en la máxima categoría, lo que no es fácil de conseguir. De hecho, con la victoria de ayer volverá a estar entre los cien mejores del mundo.

Todavía se recuerda por aquí aquella victoria heroica ante Sébastien Grosjean en la segunda rueda de 2006, y su acceso a los octavos de final, donde perdió con David Nalbandian, luego de haber atravesado la clasificación. Con él, un nutrido grupo de jugadores consiguió llegar a los torneos de ATP: Diego Hartfield, Sergio Roitman, Carlos Berlocq y Juan Pablo Brzezicki, entre otros. Por eso, de alguna manera, es un referente para los que hoy siguen el mismo camino.

Vassallo Argüello, el jugador que instaló la definición de "tenista rico y tenista pobre", dijo: "Creo que todos entendieron que no hay una sola manera de llegar cuando no tenés el talento de los mejores. Tenés que sumar puntos en los Challengers, jugar las qualies de los torneos grandes, encontrar tiros que te puedan servir en el alto nivel. Los que lo aguantan logran satisfacciones como las de Decoud, Schwank, Junqueira y Machi González en este torneo. Esto es la alegría más grande que le puede dar el tenis a un jugador de Challenger: saber que después de pasar la qualy uno queda mano a mano con cualquiera. Esa sensación es la más linda que hay".

-¿Vos sos un tenista pobre o rico ahora?

-Cambiaron varias cosas que hacen que mi situación sea distinta. Me entreno más parecido a los tenistas ricos. Tengo una infraestructura distinta, viajo acompañado todo el año, las giras son más cortas, juego menos interclubes, cuento con psicólogo, con preparador físico... Son cosas que ayudan, porque cuando uno tiene cada pedacito de su vida en orden, está ordenado en la cancha también.

-Como para graficar la evolución, ¿en qué cambiaron tus objetivos en estos años?

-Hace unos años, mi objetivo era pasar la qualy de un Grand Slam. Y una vez que conseguí entrar, pasó a ser ganar la primera rueda, objetivo que cumplí. Es una etapa clave, tenés nervios, es peligrosa. Se caen grandes jugadores y para nosotros, que no somos los favoritos, es importantísima, porque jugamos con chicos de mejor ranking y que todavía no están en ritmo, por lo que es un buen momento para dar un golpe.

-¿Te sentís un ejemplo?

-Ojalá lo sea. Me tocó ser el primero del grupo de chicos con los que compartí muchos años de Challengers, pero ya había una idea en todos de que no estábamos tan lejos, y el que más encarna esto es Walter Grinóvero, el entrenador de Machi , de Junqueira, de Brzezicki el año último. Es el que más enseña que se puede, hace que confíen en sus armas, porque uno cuando lo ve de afuera piensa que es imposible llegar acá. No te digo a un top ten, pero uno ve a un 60 del mundo y sufre mirando las cosas que te faltan. El te enseña que te podés medir mano a mano en un Grand Slam.

I never had seen Schwank play until his match against Moya last week and then against Mathieu.

great tournament from him, he certainly is one of the great hopes of Argentine tennis for the future. He could well be a future Roland Garros champion in my eyes
