November 10, 2006
SAO PAULO, Brazil (AP) -- Gustavo Kuerten will play in a Challenger Series event in Paraguay next week, his first singles tournament since February.
Kuerten's last match came in Brazil's Davis Cup event against Sweden in September. He played doubles, losing in four sets. The 30-year-old Kuerten has been sidelined with chronic hip injuries.

"I'm very excited and motivated," Kuerten said. "Playing in this tournament will help me a lot."
Kuerten has played only one singles match this year, losing to Andre Ghem in the first round of the Brasil Open in February. He has played five doubles matches, winning three.
Kuerten, the top-ranked player in 2000, spent several weeks at a clinic in the United States earlier this year. He is currently ranked 1,137th.
The three-time French Open winner captured the last of his 20 titles in February 2004.
The Challenger Series event begins Monday in Asuncion, Paraguay.
