I've just discovered a match where was closer to win after saving match points in three consecutive sets.

Roland Garros 1990, 2nd round: Paul Haarhuis def. Jim Pugh 6-4 7-6(4) 6-7(5) 6-7(6) 7-5

Pugh saved 3 MP's in the 3rd, 2 MP's in the 4th and 1 MP in the 5th before lost on 7th MP for Haarhuis The match lasted 4 hours 48 minutes - one of the longest matches in Roland Garros history.

Every site on the web that has a mention of this match - and there are lots of them - has Gonzo saving 10 MPs to get to the TB.

Excluding that amazing 1930 DC match that was mentioned before, the most I can think of is Kuerten winning the 2000 RG on the 11th match point (all in the 4th set, of course).
What is the record for set points saved?

2) I know only matches with saving 8 set points. I suppose the record may comes from the longest tie-break in doubles (26:24). On the assumption that both duos have been winning own services in that tie-break alternately, the pair who eventually won the match, could have saved 10 set points - but it's only hypothesis.
Update with "new information":
1) Korolev-F.Gonzalez (Las Vegas 2008) is now tied with Kuerten-Norman (RG 2000 F) with the winner converting his 11th match point.
2) Lendl-Nystrom (RG 1987 4R) - Lendl wasted 11 set points in the 3rd set, nine on his serve at 5-3 and two more in the next game; won the match in five sets the next day after play was suspended due to darkness.

^ And this year at the US Open, Isner saved 10 setpoints against Hanescu. I've made a thread about it on GM, so if someone wants to know at which stages of a set, Isner saved setpoints, should go to GM.

I think also a Nieminen-Kohlschreiber match in Melbourne '08 match is worth to mention because Nieminen saved 11 setpoints (but in two sets... 7 & 4).

Default Re: Match points saved (21st century)

Very likely Santoro's last match with wasting match point. Here's the list of his MP-up defeats:

1992
2 - Ivanisevic (Barcelona-Olympics)
1993
3 - Stich (Long Island)
1994
1 - Delaitre (Roland Garros)
1995
2 - Pereira (US Open)
1 - Palmer (Toulouse)
1997
1 - Portas (Stuttgart)
1999
3 - M.Norman (Auckland)
2002
1 - Henman (Rotterdam)
2003
3 - Schalken (Dubai)
2005
2 - Safin (Halle)
2006
1 - Berdych (Wimbledon)
4 - Benneteau (Paris)
2009
1 - Kiefer (Miami)
3 - Korolev (Bangkok)

It can be incomplete because I've been carefully making this stats since 1998 I know that Santoro wasted also match points in two Challenger matches: 4 against Moldovan (Poznan 1996) and 1 against Gaudio (Bordeaux 2009). Probably had also at least one match point against Monfils in Tunis 2005 because lost 5-7 6-3 6-7(9). I know only two cases with 11-9 without savin SP...

Voo, I talked to Lapentti about his stat of never losing a match after having Match Point yesterday in BS AS.

He told me lost once, its this:

1998 Cincinatti
S Draper def N Lapentti 64 46 75

He had one match point.

Just saw he lost some Match Points against Dosedel as well.

By the way, I talked to him about being 6 matches away from the 5set winning matches all time leader, he laughed about it and told me he would try to do it He was amazed about some of the stats i talked to him about.

Thank you. I'll add it to my MP-stats. Ask him, if you can, about matches with McGuire (Coral Springs 1996) and Dosedel (Key Biscayne 1998) and hail him from me

Has there been a situation like that in the past that a player retired after wasting matchpoints ? How will you count it today ?

Gonzo had 7 matchpoints (*4-5 15-40 and three advantages and *5-6 15-40)
