Yes, It was me who was doubtful about the word
It didn´t sounded very spontaneous that´s why I just wrote "mean" instead of "mathematical mean", which translation in Spanish is just one word
I was not sure if it was right and "mathematical mean" was rather redundant.

He seems a rather pleasant young man. Like Sue said right above- it will be nice to watch this guy as he grows during his career.
yes, i think so too Clara Bow

agree with you about watching him grow up...there is another interview very nice when he was 12 and he already showed how nice he could be!

i like he has good average in Geography, Language and History (the last 2 my fav too!). And as i said before i truly wish him to accomplish his dreams studying Architechture which seems very difficult right now.

Default Re: Del Potro's News and Articles

This is the interview when he was 12. I will translate it soon today, next hours after my lunch

Well Maria, I honestly think it will be very difficult for anyone to overtake Roger at his current level. However Roger is in is mid-20's now, and in 7 years, he wil be over 30, and JM will still only be 25, so................... yes I think he has a good chance if he can stay injury free, and focused.

Default Re: Del Potro's News and Articles

Translation of the interview when he was 12, very nice to see how he was at his 12, and that he keeps going for the same way and a little bit of his history too

Interview with JMDP, the 10 April 2001

He is 12 years old, he was born in Tandil (Bs.Aires state), on 23 Septembre 1988. His parents are Daniel and Patricia. He lives in Tandil and he is the actual Nº 1 in the Menores National Ranking (i think this is the previous category before Juniors but i could be wrong).
Juan Martín del Potro started to play at 6 in the Club Independiente of Tandil with proffessor Marcelo Gomez who continues training right now.

JM played his first National at 7 in Bragado, State of Bs.As. The most important match was his win over Luis García de Quevedo (the winner for the previous 3 stages) in 3 sets, saving a match point. In that tourny of the COSAT, played in Villa María Córdoba, he arrived QF, baten by the player who after that won the trophy.

His last result was again QF in March 2001, in la COSAT, in Paraguay, losing to Román Recarte who won the tourny.

He plays with Head Ti.Fire raquet and his main ambition is to be top ten and gain the recognition between tennis people. His idols are Pete Sampras and Jennifer Capriati. He admires betwen the argentinians Mariano Zabaleta and Guillermo Coria; and the most important thing...he says he have fun playing tennis.

He was the argentinian representant of Nike Junior Tour (World Cup of kids in Sudáfrica) at the end of 2000, losing the finals (he played with health problems and had to retire) with the score on his side 6/1 - 5/2 and 30/0.

In the mornings he atends Colegio San José where he is in 7 grade. In the afternoons he trains and work on his physic, and twice a week he goes to
English classes. His fav music is the group Maná. (so naive! )

With 12 years and a half, he started to compete in the category of 16 and remarks that his project is to keep training and "to learn" in that new category.

If the tennis was an object....JM said to us he will keep it in his table night, that it would be in blue-yellow color (he is real fans of Boca Juniors, the soccer team that uses those colors) and for that too the smell of tenis would be "bostero".(this is a joke that people does to the team and fans of Boca Juniors, very hard to explain). The number that woudl represent it would be 10 (the number used by Juan Román Riquelme on his soccer shirt) and the music of tenis would be "Strongers" of Britney Spears.

"A pleno Tenis" shared a moment with this charming kid. His humility, his respect and his good serious mind will lead him very far in his career. This is our opinion and our wish. His tennis allows us to keep the illusion very high!!!.

There are a lot of things that come into play for a player getting to be the number 1. Some of them are: talent, mental strenght, health, opposition and luck.

Juan Martín surely has the talent (and the potential given his age) to be between the top players of the tour. And he is starting to show some temperament and fighting spirit in under pressure conditions... which is a good sign.

Now, nobody can tell if he is going to stay injury free or if some new players that could relegate him will come around in the next years.

Sabatini was a volley away from being the #1, and she missed. There are some matches, or even some points that can change the career of a player. Coria missed two shots just for a couple of centimeters that would have given him the RG title. Where would Coria be right now if he won that match?
Luck takes a part many times in the career of a player.

So we will have to wait and see. But of course, watching Del Potro play makes us think about his future and it looks auspicious.

Del Potro is a promising player, and I hope he gets to fulfill his potential. Top ten, top five, number one... I really don't know.

good point, Willy!

you made me remember that Wimbledon final where Sabatini got a match point and couldn't do it...she never came back after that chance missed...you are right about that, same for Coria. But i must say i did prefer Sabatini: she at least won a Slam, Coria never.

Back to JM, i agree to your view ..but in your list of things a player needs to be number 1 what does mean "opposition"?

what I meant was the quality of the rivals. For example Nadal would have probably been #1 if he played before Federer developed into one of the greatest ever. Or its probable that Moya wouldn't have been #1 if Federer was playing during Carlos' golden days.

edit: and I think Sabatini didn't get a match point. She was two points away from the Wimbledon title and the #1 spot in the rankings. She missed an easy volley that would have given her the championship point.

Of all the things that stood out, this photo did the most. THREE necklaces!!! I've seen pics of other players that age, like Nadal and Gasquet... but they only wore ONE necklace. Was this the style in Argentina, or was Juan Martín a bit unusual?

I do like his extreme intelligence. If he has fashion sense, too... well, that would be the icing on the cake!

This is a video of Infantino talking about his job with Del Potro. Its from segundosaque.com, so you can watch it there or download it from here: http://rapidshare.com/files/16588918/Infantino.flv.html

Its in Spanish.

There are videos of Del Potro talking in that site too, also in Spanish.

For those who don't know, "Segundo saque y a correr" is a website made by Martín Vasallo Arguello and Juan Pablo Guzmán.

Not as fun as tenis pro, but with much more info about the sport, trainings, interesting interviews and the inside of the ATP world.

Hi Rose,

the site still needs some development... it should have a search engine.

instructions:

click on "perfiles" (below on the page). There you have all the Del Potro videos. And after that, if you want to watch Infantino, click on "entrenadores" (on top of the page, on the right).

OK thanks! I'm just home from work, and think I may need some food before I try this!!! Sounds way to complicated for me
