Default Re: Del Potro's News and Articles

I just found this DPA (German Press Agency) article on Yucatan.com.mx. It contains interviews with Nadal, González, and even Hewitt, who all give JMDP a ringing stamp of approval. Don't have time to translate the article, but the title reads: "Despite Being Eliminated, Del Potro Astonishes in Australia."
---------------------

Diario de Yucatán, edición eletrónica Deportes-Tenis. 1/19/2007

"Estaba hundido y le he animado.

Default Re: Del Potro's News and Articles

Quick translation of article above:

In spite of being beaten, del Potro Astonishes in Australia.

The Argentine Juan Martín del Potro has confirmed in Australia why he is being picked as one of the stars of the future on the tennis circuit. Figures such as Rafael Nadal, Lleyton Hewitt and Fernando González are already talking about him as someone who will have great successes in the near future.

At only just 18 years old, he has burst with force onto the Argentine tennis scene at an uncertain time for them. After the consistent David Nalbandian, the unquestionable Argentine Number One despite his physical problems, there is a gap opening between him and the rest of the "legion". That gap could be filled by either Juan Chela, Jose Acasuso or Agustín Calleri if they take a step up, or by del Potro if he makes the jump

The option of del Potro seems the most likely when you look at his semi final appearance in Adelaide and also at his level in the second round in the Australia Open against the Chilean Fernando González, a "top ten" player who was forced to play five sets by del Potro who only surrendered in the end because he was not so physically strong as his opponent. "In tenis terms there was not much difference between us, I played equal to him and at the same level, - my physical strength was the key", del Potro (World No, 73) said after his duel with González.. The Argentine was playing in his 3rd Gramd Slam in Australia and it was his best result so far, and the first time he had played a 5 set match.

Rafael Nadal, aged 20 and the World Number 2. "He did not seem inferior in any way. He is going to be very good, he is very young and he needs plenty of matches at a high level. That only needs time ". The Spaniard was in the locker room after the Gonzalez match and helped to lift his spirits. "He was down and I tried to cheer him up. He is very young. I said to him that I also had cramps two years ago against Hewitt ". Nadal emphasised the tennis of the Argentine, saying that he has a great backhand, and as well as the advantage of being 195 centimeters, he also has his backhand, his serve and his return.

"He moves and returns very welI" , praised González. "He has very good shots, a great forehand, and he moves and retuns very well. Anyone of his age who is already in the 70's in the world, is good, and is going to get better ", foretold the Chilean, that has beaten him 3 times now but always with many difficulties.

Also Hewitt noticed the virtues of the Argentine. "I had heard a lot of things about him. I saw him in Roland Garros. He seems quite dangerous on clay and on slower hard courts. He has a great game, good serve, good forehand and moves very well. ".

Del Potro is not led astray by these praises, and he is conscious of his weaknesses. "I must improve my physical strength, In fact I must improve everything, as I'm still not winning these matches ",he said with humility, which is the same way he speals about his chances to make his Davis Cup debut in the first round in Austria, although this is already known to be a distinct possibility. At the moment, Del Potro is not scared by the pressure of being the new promise of the "legion". "I put pressure on myself because I don't like to lose anything", he said. The Argentine is open and honest, and at the moment, he is not wary of speaking to the Press like so many on the circuit. He criticised rhe Chilean fans, he is sincere and humble, and he says what is on his mind without hesitation. He speaks of his friends with nostalgia. "My frieds are on the beach now, and I am here", he says. But his life has other advantages. "The rewards are good", he smiles. "But when I am with my friends thery are with me because I am Juan Martín the person, they are not with the tennis player, they are not interested in that". Today he left Australia to meet again with those friends in Argentina, but exen though he has left the circuit, it is beginning to pay attention to the name of a new tennis player in the "legion" - Juan Martín del Potro.

Hi guys, sorry for posting this here, wasn't really sure where to put it. Just wanted to say I won't be around MTF or even KOC much in the coming months due to some issues (although I'll still be posting in GL) and wanted to wish JMDP and all the fans here good luck in the coming months. I'm sure Kamikaze will be giving alot for people to talk about and continuing his rise.

GL to Rosie with the JMDP forum, hope to speak to you all again sooner rather than later.

Default Re: Del Potro's News and Articles

There is a long article about the state of Argentine tennis in Juan's local paper today http://www.tandilportandil.com.ar/le...s.asp?id=22178. Here is a quick translation the part relevant to him:-

.".......So the hopes are centred on the youngest player, most specifically Juan Martín del Potro. The man from Tandil has made an enviable rise, and is already at Number 67, with important performances in the main matches. For example, in Australia he battled all the way before fatigue finally beat him against the eventual runner-up Fernando González. Also, in Adelaide, he got to the semifinals. At this stage of last year, del Potro was at Number 159 in the world,, and 12 months before that, he was down in the 1,000s. Mancini already has his eye on him for the Davis Cup, and it would not be preposterous to soon have him in the Top 30."

From Davis Cup site

Argentina finds a new hero

Eighteen-year-old Juan-Martin Del Potro made a sensational debut for Argentina on Sunday, defeating Jurgen Melzer in five sets to send his country through to the quarterfinals of the 2007 Davis Cup by BNP Paribas.

With Argentina 2-1 up after the first two days, Argentine captain Alberto Mancini chose to replace Jose Acasuso with Del Potro for the first reverse singles, and the move paid off, the teenager overcoming Melzer 76(4) 36 64 46 62 in three hours 26 minutes.

The win proves that Argentina are still a powerful force without their talisman David Nalbandian, and that their strength in depth keeps growing.

Host nation Austria must now play in September's Play-offs for the chance to retain their World Group status.

in TYC sports
