Default del Potro's Australian swing - discussion thread

So how optimistic are we feeling for the first stretch of the season in Australia? Last year, Juan didn't play any warm-up and then lost R3 of AO to Chardy; needless to say, it's quite reasonable to expect a much stronger start to the season this year.

He's playing Sydney this year and of course AO. First opponent is the winner of tonight's Mahut vs Harrison. Full draw here:

Just the SF and the F could be tricky matches. A match with Stepanek could also be difficult giving his style. But I think he is going to take the title

Yeah, I'm not expecting Mahut/Harrison to cause a lot of problems. Either way, I think we'd all agree that more important than whether he wins Sydney or not is that he is in good form for AO. He needs to start having a more consistent impact on the biggest events and regularly compete for the title.

I think that especially if he's drawn in Nadal's half of the draw he has a more than decent chance to make it to the final there. At the very least, he needs to play well and make QF-SF though.

Ok, changed it.

First opponent is Mahut, only time Juan faced him in the past was in US Open 2007 - he won 6-0 6-4 6-2.

Still, not exactly an ideal opponent to start with imo knowing how much Juan always struggles with players who approach the net well, but I still believe he wins in 2 sets.

First match was a 1-6 6-3 6-4 win over Mahut, far from an easy opening against a tricky matchup but he got the win. Another match today against a difficult opponent in Stepanek, who has a somewhat similar style, let's hope Juan can play better and win that one.

Well, Juan ended up winning the title in Sydney, improved match by match and really destroyed both Tursunov and Tomic in his final two matches. Looks sharp for the Australian Open, let's hope he can match expectations.

One match at a time though, first off is Rhyne Williams, a qualifier, on Tuesday, can't take that one lightly.
