While Ecuador and Pakistan slumped from World Group candidates to Group II participants in just twelve months, three nations celebrated promotion to Group I for the first time in their history, following the eight zonal ties that took place this weekend.

Twelve months ago, Ecuador and Pakistan were reflecting on successful Davis Cup campaigns, having qualified for last year’s World Group Play-offs. However, after a poor year both countries now face starting 2007 in Group II of their respective zonal competitions.

Pakistan lost its third away tie of the year, falling to China, who wrapped up the tie with a day to spare, and going down to Group II for the first time since 2002. Ecuador also lost its tie in Venezuela after two days and returns to Americas Group II in 2007 for the first time since 1996.

Great Britain, who also contested a World Group Play-off at this stage of last year’s competition avoided a similar fate to Ecuador and Pakistan, defeating Ukraine in Odessa to preserve its place in Europe/Africa Group I, and sending its opponent straight back down to Group II. Portugal, who earned promotion to Group I alongside Ukraine last year fared better, ending Morocco’s seven-year stay in the upper echelons of Davis Cup with a 3-2 victory in Marrakech.

In the four Group II promotion play-offs, Kazakhstan won both singles rubbers on Sunday to defeat Indonesia and gain promotion to Asia/Oceania Group I for the first time, while near-neighbours Georgia overcame a 0-2 first day deficit, fighting back to defeat Hungary 3-2, and also earn promotion to Europe/Africa Group I for the first time.

A third nation earned Group I status for the first time as F.Y.R Macedonia finally clinched its tie with Finland in Skopje, completing the fifth rubber on Monday morning. This represents the ninth Davis Cup tie in a row that the Macedonians have won in a two-year period that has seen them climb from Group III to Group I.

Dominican Republic was also bidding to advance to Americas Group I for the first time, having reached the Americas Group II final for the third time in four years but Colombia proved too strong, winning 5-0 and return to Group I for the first time since 2000.

there was some sort of problems with audience, makedonian players, referees and field officials. there was unsports-man-like behaviour from makedonian pleyers, they were calling medical personels when they were tired. mediacal personals didnt come to the field right a way. when finnish player were serving audience was booing and shouting to finnish players. Mystically lights went down every evening and games was forced to stop because there wasnt enough light. Nieminen was sick all week and finnish team wasnt sure if he can play. Timo nieminen was in shock because audience behaviour.
