Well... best cities... I'm in Melbourne and I absolutely love it here. It's pretty, there are lots of nice parks, there's awesome shopping in the city and in various other places, it's great for food - there are many awesome restaurants and such. Melbourne also has really good nightlife. If you're going to Melbourne, I strongly recommend you hire a car and drive down the Great Ocean Road - it's simply stunning.
Sydney is awesome as well - especially if you really want to go sightseeing as it's got lots of famous things like the Opera House and Harbour Bridge. The shopping there is fantastic and it's just a beautiful city and nearby places like Manly and Bondi are stunning however Sydney is more expensive than Melbourne.
As for the other capital cities - I can't tell you much as I've never lived there. However, there's somewhere called Broome which has GORGEOUS beaches and so beautiful.
If you're looking for a zoo - I recommend Australia Zoo (Steve Irwin's zoo) which is really really good. Melbourne and Taronga zoo (Sydney) are also really good.

It basically depends what you want to see! If you have any (more specific?) questions - feel free to ask!!

Ok, what about Canberra, is it cool, or is it boring?

Is Ayer's rock worth visiting, and do you know of any tours that take you to see wild life (not a zoo necesarily)?

I have a question, and it might be equally or more suited for non-Australian residents.

Are there any ways around the $2,000 +/- 500 USD round trip airfare?!

I am able, but I don't know how willing, to put that down for the flight itself.

The only creative thing I have heard is from a friend who said sometimes delivering items (like a courier) can sometimes get things cheaper.

Yeah, Central Australia is wonderful as well. There are heaps of tours around there and I strongly recommend you spend some time in the outback to look at the gorges, waterfalls and such around there - it's a really beautiful place!
Canberra is yeah, not the most exciting place - not much goes on there and I think there are many better places to travel.
Sorry but I don't know much about wildlife tours - maybe go on the Australian Tourism website to have a look? I'm sure there'll be heaps of info there!

Yeah I don't think there are many ways around that. I assure you though - it's well worth the airfare!!

WTF. All I ever hear, from people living in cities other than Sydney/Melbourne, is what a hole their city is I'm from Sydney, born in Perth. I like to live in a reasonably populated area.

Canberra - could be boring, but it has awesome museums and the War Memorial which is a nice area. In terms of Australias history, I would recommend a couple of days here. And yep, Questacon (the science museum) is a lot of fun

Adelaide - has been lovely when I've been there, but it's kind of dead. There are more exciting places I would rather be, personally (unless you were attending the tennis tournament and like to bump into players all the time as the city is quite small compared to others.

Sydney - Shopping, Food, Clubbing (something for everyone), culture (Chinatown/theatre etc), good looking people in lunch hour , Public Transport System is pretty good as it goes to most areas you would want to visit, but it can be extremely unreliable at times. Then again, we now have less trains, so that they run on time :retard:

We have quite a few National Parks worth visiting, and you can go bushwalking quite easily. As for beaches, Manly would be a good place to absorb a bit of umm...beach culture, I guess. It's relaxed yet has some nice restaurants and the markets are pretty good. Taronga Zoo is a nice day out (of course I'm going to say that), but it's built on a slope, so depending on how fit you are, if it's a big day you could be tired fairly easily It's on a fairly small area of land though, so this works in its favour.

In Sydney I doubt you would even want to go to the Western Suburbs (Campbelltown - Cabramatta - Penrith basically) but the Blue Mountains are Just outside of Penrith, so this could be a worthwhile day trip if you're into Nature. There are a lot of tours departing from the city (Star City Casino) that you can take. Peta Pan might be online later, she's been on one of these tours at least

I forgot an important city. If you want sport...go to Melbourne. Melbourne is an extremely cool city but Sydney is better (I live here...I'm supposed to say this, and I look forward to Peta's reply). Melbourne has all the sport. The bastards. Thanks a lot Jeff Kennett! (Previous leader of Victoria). Watching the sunset at St Kilda Sea Baths is an enjoyable evening

edit: No worries
And... Tasmania is beautiful in terms of the environment. Contrary to popular belief, the locals do not have two heads.
