I am in Bangkok and I'm not worried even one bit. I think the seriousness of the situation is wildly exaggerated by the press, as always. It's like when they see tanks on street they go "oooh, coup, coup! the end of democracy! violence!" when, in fact, most locals do not panic because they know this government has it comin' and been rather expecting it. It's not like the coup just happened out of the blue.

This is way off Marat's topic but in my opinion, sometimes coups are necessary if a corrupted leader manipulate democracy to justify his own goal. So I guess most urban Thais are relieved this finally happened.

Plus, the leader of the coup is well-known among Thais as a respectable, honorable man who is very loyal to the king and so far has never put his nose in politics, until now. We know right away that when a man of his stature acts on something like this, it means something is really wrong with the government.

I really don't think this would affect the safety or anything about Thailand Open the tourney. The only problem seems to be that foreigners who watch the situation only through the heavily sensetionalized news would be panicked and think that it would not be safe to even set a foot here in Thailand because they might be kidnapped as political pawn. When, in fact, I'm 100% sure those things won't happen. Life just goes on.

glad you're so optimistic, it's reassuring.
I know nothing about thai situation and politics, but, to me, the army taking power is NEVER a really good thing, and should never be underestimated. for all the comforting confident voices, i'll always hear one worrying about democracy, (not for tourists or tennis tournaments).

Yes, I understand your concern. But for the situation as it is now, I would say that there's no better way. In fact, I've never been this happy for ages.

The word 'democracy' is tricky in a sense that it can be easily turned into mob power. For many years, this ex-PM has been brainwashing the people into supporting him, buying them with his money. He was the one who made the concept of democracy of Thailand so skewed and nothing can be done against him coz he used the loopholes of the constitution. In other words, he managed to manipulate the rightful means to his wrong end. On the other hand, the armed force might not seem like a good means to foreigners, but we locals know that it is the only way to oust this PM since all other means have been exhausted and yet he still clung onto his power and build up farce after farce.

I think I could give one vivid metaphor that would best illustrate the situation. Supposed Thailand is a school and there was an election for class president. Then a group of kids bullying every other kid to vote for them. They took control and changed things around to give themselves privilege. They treat the whole school like their very own playground, and yet always claim their legitimacy under the name of democracy. And the other kids are too afraid to do anything. I believe that anyone who knows the situation would wish an adult would come along, smack the bully kids' head and put them into proper place.

P.S. I'm sorry I'm taking this fully into political arena, but I guess it is not altogether inappropriate. For all I know the tournament is still on and Baggy is already here. So I can say there's nothing to worry about.

If Marat plays on Sunday and it happens to be a long match ...let's face it, he may w/o from Thailand and even if not it will likely be another first round exit.

Yeah, it all depends on how DC goes. If he plays on Sunday it is likely what you said. But two years ago, right after the doubles match on Saturday Marat flew to Bangkok and came to the court right away on Sunday evening. I was so shocked coz I didn't think he would arrive this fast. But I guess having Allon as the tournament director kinda makes Marat feel more committed to the event.

From the official site :
20.09.06 Marat News: Marat is well and happy and very focused for Davis Cup this weekend.
Re Thailand Open - Marat is still going to be there. As Allon Khakshouri of his management, is Tournament Director he trusts his judgement on the situation and he is still going.
