STUTTGART, Germany, July 24 (Reuters) - Teenager Rafael Nadal was given a new sports car as part of his prize for winning the Mercedes Cup on Sunday but he was not allowed to drive it any further than centre-court.
At the age of 19, the Spaniard has already been crowned French Open champion but he has yet to pass his driving test.
"I don't know if I'll be able to do this," the shy Nadal said after being invited to drive the prize from the tournament sponsors across centre-court. "I've never done it before."
After being shown how to turn on the ignition, he drove the car forward a couple of metres before the photographers swarming around him slowed his progress.
Gaston Gaudio, beaten 6-3 6-3 6-4 by Nadal, looked on frustratedly after losing in the Stuttgart final for the third time.
"He took my Mercedes," the Argentine sighed. "Maybe I'll have to think about another brand."
