Cross your fingers, knock on wood, anything - I really want to see him playing well there this year, there's a potential for indoor monstrousness that's barely even been explored. Anyone else remember the days when indoors was his best surface in terms of winning percentage? I've long dreamt of a Basel-Paris double - two prestigious carpet tournaments, two grandiose centre courts with pink/blue backgrounds, and two events where he has underachieved in the past.

ROGER FEDERER: Yeah, I remember this one time when I went on a vacation on the Maldives. That was in the year 2001, I think. I went to this spa. I went to walk around with my girlfriend. I walk in, and we want to book a spa. This guy goes, "AHH, I remember you. You beat Sampras. I saw you on TV." That was like, really, how can you remember me? This guy has probably never been off his island and still knows me. I was a little bit shocked. Then I went to play tennis with him because he was actually the tennis teacher. It was nice.

Q. Were you naked at the time in the spa?

ROGER FEDERER: No. It was at the front desk. I didn't walk in naked.

Thanks a lot for the thread Robinwood. Great title.

It's unfortunate that Basel is in the middle of 2 masters, if it was 2 masters and then Basel, he could just skip the second masters, rest a week and play Basel, but unfortunately this isn't the case.

Do you seriously think he will take part in both, as well as Basel ? I don't think he will skip Basel (as long as he doesn't get damn injuried again ). I expect him to attend one of the masters and skip the other for TMC.

Nice thread title Robin

Hopefully, Roger will have a successful Indoor season and pick up some cushion points for next year

Who thinks he should play Madrid?
If he does and ends up facing Nadal in the final there, I wonder what the atmosphere is going to be like.

But Paris is rather too close to TMC, isn't it?
Maybe he should play Madrid and Basel instead.

Sorry about that. I knew your name was Robinhood, but as I was typing I typed "w" instead of "h" without noticing cause they sound very similar when read as a word.

I think he will skip Madrid and play Basel then Paris................I'm also not sure about the type of reception he would receive in Madrid if he played that tournament.

I don't think he should play Madrid............I think the atmosphere will be even worst than the J-Block at the US Open.

The thing about Madrid is not only the crowd but the altitude, the ball flies a lot and Federer's said in the past he's found it difficult to adjust to those conditions - imagine facing Nadal's topspin on that kind of court where it really jumps up at you. If at all possible it would be good if he could win matches at both Masters events though, because make no mistake, he is definitely going to need that cushion come January. Assuming Nadal defends in Madrid and gains significant points at the TMC, he has 0 points to defend at the AO to Federer's 1000.

This isn't Davis Cup, is it? They'd be full of admiration and respect for him if he showed up, in fact I think they'd just be happy that he had finally made it there as the world no. 1 for the first time. It would only get rowdy if he faced Nadal in the final, I remember his matches against Lopez and Ferrero back in 2003 and while there was a very good atmosphere there was nothing at all hostile directed towards him that I can remember. Now if he'd gotten as close to beating Ferrero as Ferreira did in the opening round, maybe he would have had the same kind of heckling treatment the South African did....

I know it isn't Davis Cup..........Nadal is the sweetheart in Spain, his popularity surpasses Lopez and Ferrero. Roger will be going to Spain as the no. 1 player who is presently in a supposed rivalry with Nadal. The atmosphere will be different from his prior matches in Madrid. In addition to this, the Spanish media frequently paints a negative picture of Roger. If he and Nadal were to meet in the final, Roger will be playing Nadal, the crowd and the media...........

You know I don't mind too much about the atmosphere. The only thing I know is how great it would be if Roger can grab the title from Nadal's hands on his home soil But I also don't mind if he skips Madrid.
