On first sight Barca x Man Utd looks okay, I am not touching Bayern or Chelsea, Valencia and Inter Milan could be interesting, PSV - Liverpool is an interesting game as well.

Real Madrid is highly rated as well. Any thought on these matches?

Barca -2 (if they win by 2 so you get the money back) @ 1.87 looks like a gold to me

Benfica at 2.55 is worth a bet, Barca and Man Utd are very likely to win, so I reckon a treble for me at 3.70 is nice.

Default Re: Champions League 12/13-09.

For tomorrow I will take Valencia, Inter, Barcelona -1 and Chelsea.

Valencia seems strong, they got a good start in the competition. I like the odd and somehow I seem them taking the 3 points in Greece.

Inter same story, great start, got some new players; they are very strong and this should be their season. Their opponent Sporting is without their whole midfield and a youngster will be playing as a defensive midfielder. Good odd, Inter should take 3 points.

Barcelona is strong, really strong. I saw their goals vs Osasuna. Great play, great finishing. They should have an easy night and score at least 2 or 3.

The bet on Chelsea is more a bet against Werder. They are without their goalie, they got kicked out by amateurs in the weekend for the german cup and their away games record is not great. Chelsea is Chelsea. They have to perform. Should be taking the three points.

About the PSV - Liverpool game; to give you some Dutch insight. Kluivert still lackes match fitness and he will definitely not be playing from the start. Cocu, captain and leader, is suspended, a huge disadvantage for PSV. Kromkamp will play vs his former club, Alex will be back in the team and new player Mendes had a great debut on saturday. From what I have seen from Liverpool, they aren't in the greatest form. The goals Everton scored where huge mistakes in the defence. I would rather lean to PSV 1x then a win for Liverpool, but for me it is definitely a no bet.

Default Re: Champions League 12/13-09.

I've got a couple of bets for today - here are the full previews:

CHELSEA v WERDER BREMEN
Group A, Matchday 1
Chelsea v Bremen, Tuesday 12 September
Stamford Bridge, 20:45 CET

The top two favourites for the Champions League (Barcelona and Chelsea) paired in the same group makes for some early excitement in sometimes predictable group stages. That is bad news for Werder Bremen who have qualified out of the group stages the past two seasons in their last matches. Is a 3rd spot and UEFA Cup football the best they can hope for?

Chelsea

English Champions for the past two seasons and a coach in Jose Mourinho who has already lifted the title that billionaire owner Roman Ambramovich desperately wants which is still missing from the Stamford Bridge trophy room.

That win was in much less glamarous circumstances as Porto defeated the odds with organisation and teamwork winning through. Many of those characteristics along with luck which Porto also experienced are still necessary to win this trophy. After two years with a team which perhaps didn't mirror the Russian's deep pockets the summer marked a change in attitude. The signing of premier players; Ashley Cole, Michael Ballack and Andriy Shevchenko in each position along with a new attack-minded approach are those which Mourinho believes is the way to approach this European campaign.

First they must negotiate their way out the first phase. As they still find themselves as second seeds at this stage they have a familiar opponent in Barcelona. As the draw would have it they will meet in the back-to-back middle matches in what is likely to decide the group winners.

So far Mourinho's new Chelsea hasn't clicked. They lost in the English Super Cup and suffered an early Premiership defeat as Man Utd made a superior start domestically. The midfield lacks width and isn't helped by injuries to creative players; Robben and Joe Cole. A relatively uncertain defence now without William Gallas and Shevchenko playing a wide stiker role still settling into life not at Milan.

Werder Bremen

Werder Bremen are probably the most cultured team in Germany. Unfortunately their entertaining, attacking football is not rewarded especially with Bayern Munich and their compartive financial positon.

Their unrelenting attacking style results in some unusual results in this competition. Last season they started with an unjust 2-0 defeat to Barcelona in which they arguably gave the eventual champions their toughest match in the whole competition. Big home wins against Udinese(4-3) and Panathinaikos(5-1) were against opposition of lower quality.

Their biggest moment would come against Juventus where they won the first leg in Germany 3-2 after flooding forward in the dying moments and hitting Juventus twice to reverse a lead. Despite futher extending that lead in Turin by scoring first they would sensationally lose in the final minutes when goalkeeper Wiese let go of the ball after an Oliver Kahn-style roll and was punished by Emerson to fire an unexpected winner for Juventus.

Under the guidance of coach Thomas Schaaf little will change in their style for this upcoming campaign as their Bundesliga performances have pointed out in recent weeks. German World Cup defender Per Mertesacker signed from Hannover was brought in as the defensive solution. Influential French playmaker Johan Micoud returned to his homeland and was replaced by Brazilian Diego who perhaps will find the Bundesliga club the stage to show the talent that had him dubbed as the 'Wonderkid No.10'.

Probable teams

With Chelsea most likely to employ a 4-4-2 diamond both teams will line-up with the same formations. The alternative for Mourinho is drop a defensive midfielder (Essien or Makelele) and introduce Wright-Phillips which can then allow the formation to be switched to 4-3-3 during the game (Shevchenko likely to operate wide). Ashley Cole could also make his first start in a Chelsea shirt.

Bremen have defensive problems with Mertesacker missing and 37 year-old goalkeeper Reinke coming in for first choice Wiese. With his age his movement on crosses is suspect and with Chelsea's strength from set-pieces this looks an obvious weakness. Miroslav Klose is struggling with a thigh injury although is expected to play - nonetheless I expect Bremen to stick to their attacking style.

Chelsea (4-1-2-1-2): Cech; Boulahrouz, Ricardo Carvalho, Terry, Ashley Cole; Makelele; Essien, Lampard; Ballack; Shevchenko, Drogba.

Bremen (4-1-2-1-2): Reinke; C. Fritz, Pasanen, Naldo, Womé; Baumann; Frings, Borowski; Diego; Klose, Klasnic.

Verdict

A probable Chelsea victory but I expect Bremen to make it uncomfortable for the English Champions who aren't as assured as we've seen them in the past. I'm not too impressed with the price on the home win and instead I'm more attracted to the goals market in this match:

- OVER 2.5 GOALS @ 1.80

Bremen will not come and pack the midfield as Chelsea so often experience in the Premiership. That should make for an open-attacking game which will suit Chelsea. I'm anticipating Bremen scoring at some stage but the weaknesses across the backline for Bremen and how they match up against Chelsea could mean some goals for the home side.

Default Re: Champions League 12/13-09.

BARCELONA v LEVSKI SOFIA
Group A, Matchday 1
Barcelona v Levksi, Tuesday 12 September
Camp Nou, 20:45 CET

The title holders kick off their campaign as they attempt to do what no team has before - retain the UEFA Champions League. On paper many believe they are in the best position to achieve this feat. As for Levski Sofia - the Bulgarian Champions are debutants and their countries first representatives in the competition which they will take enormous pride in.

Barcelona

After the disappointment of a 3-0 defeat in the UEFA Super Cup to rivals Sevilla the domestic season has started as Barcelona look set to stamp their authority from the outset. They face an earlier battle however in the Champions League after drawing Chelsea at this stage. The two will undoubtedly fight over first spot and secretly both sides must be happy as this scenario means they will do something they've not managed the last two seasons - avoid each other at the last 16 stage.

Home matches in the Champions League at this stage are the usual entertaining and attacking thrashings where Barcelona are envied. Last season they crushed Panathinaikos(4-1), Udinese(5-0) and Bremen(3-1) at this stage. Conversely they only managed 1 win in their remaining 3 matches at the knockout stages and the total goals in those aggregate wins were a fraction of those performances just mentioned. Still at this stage and against this sort of opposition Barca frighten the opposition as they are the holders of best defender (Puyol), midfielder (Deco), striker (Eto'o) and overall player (Ronaldinho) as voted for by UEFA for last season.

It doesn't end there with the arrivals of Lillian Thuram and Zambrotta to add different dimensions to a defence. Lionel Messi can only improve after a debut season. They have lost Henrik Larsson who hasn't been replaced as such and is their only real weakness. Gudjohnsen was a strange signing as it really only leaves Barca with one out-and-out striker in Samuel Eto'o although Saviola is now back at the club too.

On that point and situation Samuel Eto'o will try and achieve something second time round which he failed last season. Just as in Barcelona's first La Liga triumph he finished behind Villarreal's Diego Forlan as 'Pichici' last season he utilised the last match of the season to claim that award. This time surely he will try the same in the UEFA Champions League after missing out to Shevchenko last season where his surroundings are so much advantageous.

Levski Sofia

Somewhat of a rising team after a successful European campaign last season in the UEFA Cup. They entered at the Second Qualifying round and soon after in the first round shocked Auxerre dumping them out of the competition on away goals. In the group phase they would negotiate their way out into the knockouts with Marseille and Heerenveen.

They would then defeat Champions League dropouts Artmedia and a demotivated Udinese side before falling to Schalke. Not a bad performance and those last three ties were against teams involved in the Champions League.

That show that perhaps they have the quality to compete at this stage. However, in a group consisting of Barcelona, Chelsea and Werder Bremen they have drawn the strongest of each tier and it seems a fall-back into the UEFA Cup will be a priority although incredibly difficult task still.

Probable teams

Barcelona (4-3-3):
Valdés; Zambrotta, Puyol, Thuram, van Bronckhorst; Edmílson, Xavi, Deco; Messi, Ronaldinho, Eto'o.

Levski (4-5-1):
Petkov; Milanov, Tomašic, Topuzakov, Angelov; Borimirov, Eromoigbe, Telkiyski, Yovov, Bardon; Angelov.

Verdict

Definite Barcelona win. I like taking bets around Eto'o scoring though (check for confirmation he starts an hour before kick-off before placing bets though):
- SAMUEL ETO'O TO SCORE ANYTIME @ 1.62 (Stan James)
- SAMUEL ETO'O TO SCORE 2 OR MORE GOALS @ 3.25 (Paddy Power)

The Eto'o bet seems really well! Nice pick. I'm taking that one as well, plus Podolski to score @ 2.20 for fun.

League form never seems to be an indication for champions league form, so it's hard to tell. The way Arsenal are playing so far though makes it very hard to back them.

They're quite hapless without Henry though. I would stay well away, and even think about laying Arsenal if the price is right.
