Exclamation Re: Tennis Austria

HOME FAVOURITE MELZER GOES OUT

Austrian Jurgen Melzer's hopes were dashed Friday when he squandered a one-set lead against Belgian Xavier Malisse in the semi-finals of the International Raiffeisen Grand Prix.

Melzer, the top-ranked Austrian who has climbed to a career-high 55th in the world, allowed Malisse to rally for a 3-6 6-3 6-3 victory. He was trying to become the first Austrian to win this title since Thomas Muster in 1995 and the first to appear in the final since Markus Hipfl three years ago.

Serving at 40-0 in the seventh game of the third set, Melzer lost the next five points to concede the break. He lost his serve again in the ninth game to end the match.

"First set I couldn't do much, he was playing really well and everything was working - his forehand, backhand and drop shots," Malisse said.

"Second set, I got more aggressive and he started making more mistakes. I served very well, the third set was close."

Malisse moved into his fifth career final - his first since April 29, 2001 in Atlanta - but still is seeking his first victory. This is the second time he has reached a final as a qualifier (1998 Mexico City).

"It's been a while since I've been in the finals," he said.

"I came here to play two, three matches and it will be my seventh (Saturday). I feel good and everything is running well."

Eighth-seeded Italian Filippo Volandri ousted sixth seed David Sanchez of Spain 6-1 4-6 6-4 in a rain-interrupted match. He has won both career meetings with Sanchez.

"I started very well, winning 6-1," Volandri said. "Maybe I relaxed too much and he put me under a lot of pressure in the second. The third set was an unbelievable fight."

The 22-year-old Volandri was runner-up to Carlos Moya at Umag last year in his only prior final. He is hoping to become the first Italian since Davide Sanguinetti in 2002 at Delray Beach to claim an ATP title.

awww its too bad that he lost, it was such a close match!
But he had an amazing two weeks! His ranking is going up fast! I just hope that he can keep up his awsome playing this week at Roland Garros...it looks like a tough draw, Hewitt in the second round.

Happy Birthday Jurgen!

Melzer sure to play Olympic tennis tournament

Way to go, Jürgen!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Quote:

yes, they were both great player and I liked both of them to see playing; I watched many matches of these two on Austrian TV when I was still a little kid.

And especially I liked all these matches as Muster and Skoff got ripped by Becker and Stich *evilgrin*
