More Dolgo from Monte Carlo Rolex Masters (sorry about the crap quality of the photos, the match was enjoyable, although D lost quickly to Gulbis, showing in the process flashes of flamboyant, inspired tennis which immediately made me his fan; also had a feeling he gave up on the match early on, which could be excused if he was still recovering from injury at that time).

Default Re: Olek Dolgopolov Jr.

great job in Umag, he will play final today against Marin Cilic

ATP NEWS

In the final Cilic will face second seed Alexandr Dolgopolov, who dismissed defending champion Juan Carlos Ferrero 6-4, 6-4. The Ukrainian converted three of his 10 break point opportunities and won 86 per cent of points on his first serve to prevail in 85 minutes.

"I played pretty well and did the right things," reflected Dolgopolov. "I managed to break up his rhythm and not play long points, so Iím happy with the way I played. I had lost four matches in a row in my last tournaments, so I was pretty nervous [at the start of the week], but Iíve been playing better and better and Iím happy with my game.

"I think itís going to be a tough match [against Cilic]," he added. "He serves well and plays steady on the court. I will try to make winners and go in a bit, hit drop shots, try to break up the game a bit."

World No. 26 Dolgopolov has made a significant stride up the South African Airways 2011 ATP Rankings this season, having started ranked No. 48, and will contest his second ATP World Tour final. In February, he finished runner-up to Nicolas Almagro on clay in the Costa do Sauipe title match, shortly after reaching the Australian Open quarter-finals (l. to Murray).

There's always a first time

First-Time Winner Spotlight Alexandr Dolgopolov

by ATP Staff | 01.08.2011

Second seed Alexandr Dolgopolov became the seventh first-time winner on the ATP World Tour this season when he defeated home favourite and fourth seed Marin Cilic 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in Sundayís final at the ATP Studena Croatia Open in Umag. ATPWorldTour.com caught up with the new champion following his victory.

How does it feel to win your first ATP World Tour title?
Iíve played pretty well for the last year, but couldnít manage to get a win. I think itís good because I worked hard to get to the final and then I managed to win it, so Iím really happy. I was first in the rankings in Ukraine, but I hadnít won a title and everyone was talking about that a bit. Itís a good moment. Iíll keep on working and try and get higher and higher in the rankings.

Itís been just over an hour since you won, how many text messages have you received?
Around 20 from my friends and people I know in the Ukraine.

How did your approach to this final differ compared to the one in Costa do Sauipe?
I think I was a bit more confident because I didnít lose a set until the final. I know my game pretty well now. The conditions suited me and it was the right day. I think my form was a bit better.

Talking about your season overall, how happy have you been with the highlights?
Iím really happy with the season. The clay-court campaign (in the spring) could have been better; I was playing pretty solid at a lot of tournaments but couldnít win anything. I hope to get better and come back.

Did you think your first title would come on clay? Whatís your favourite surface?
Pretty much clay, but I wasnít thinking about my first title. I was concentrating more on the ranking and stuff like that.

Is your goal still to reach the Top 20 at the end of the year?
Yeah, pretty much. If you are Top 20, or better Top 15, you can really plan your year better. You are able to practise more because if you are down at No. 30 or No. 40 you need to play more than practise, which makes it tough. For sure I would like to reach the Top 15 then go from there.

What are your hobbies? What do you like to do off court?
I like to spend time with my friends and I like to race cars. Thatís pretty much it. I just get back, do what normal people do - go out, go bowling, play baseball and just forget about tennis.

He was playing some amazing tennis against Karlovic...finally, after those health problems and pretty bad performances earlier...

Btw, how itīs with him and Davis Cup? I would love to see him playing here, but Iīve heard he still has some problems with federation...

Hi folks, as some of you might already have noticed on GM - Dolgo is firmly on my list of favourites for about a year, and despite losing yesterday, he's had an awesome run at this year's USO.

Great, charming, charismatic guy with all the shots you can imagine. Just needs some work on his mental fortitude and tactics (still a bit too 'playful' at times I think), but the guy's going places in the upcoming years, I'm sure of that!

Little tribute to Alexandr Dolgopolov
He made it through fourth round at the US Open 2011

No. 22 seed Alexandr Dolgopolov is making just his second US Open main draw appearance. The 22-year-old from Ukraine reached the quarters of the Australian Open in January, knocking out Tsonga and Robin Soderling in his best career Slam showing. This has been a breakout year for Dolgopolov, who won his first career title in July (Umag Croatia).

Alexandr Dolgopolov def. Frederico Gil of Portugal - Day One of the 2011 US Open on August 29, 2011.
