It was just an assumption from me anyway, I only knew that he was supposed to play for them last week-end and couldn't because of Tampere, so I thought maybe he would play this time since he wasn't playing anywhere.

Yes, the next events are Vigo and then Manerbio.

Next events aren't for a while now

Quote:
London, UK. – The ATP, governing body of the men’s professional tennis circuit, announced today that Mathieu Montcourt, France, has been found to have committed an offence under Article C.1 of the 2008 ATP Tennis Anti-Corruption Program, namely wagering on the outcome or any other aspect of an ‘Event’ (tennis matches or competitions).

An ATP investigation launched in November 2007 found that Mr. Montcourt had wagered on tennis matches during a period dating from June 2005 through September 2005. The findings of this investigation were presented to the independent Anti-Corruption Hearing Officer, Dr. Peter Bratschi.

The independent Anti-Corruption Hearing Officer confirmed that an offence had been committed under the Tennis Anti Corruption Program and determined that Mr. Montcourt should be suspended from participation on the ATP Tour for a period of 8 weeks from 11 August 2008 and fined $12,000.

Mr. Montcourt did not wager on his own matches and the independent hearing officer found no evidence of any intent to affect the outcome of any matches wagered upon. The ATP received the information that triggered these investigations in November 2007 via a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) signed with the European Sports Security Association (ESSA). That MOU was signed in January 2007.
Very annoying, just as he was coming into some good form I think it's a bit harsh as well, it was back in 2005 and he was mainly playing futures then. It wasn't really in the news either so he probably didn't think it was a big deal.

Read it this evening too. It's just so sad it comes out exactly now, not earlier, not later

The article says "suspended from participation on the ATP Tour" so I suppose he can still play club events and perhaps some local tournaments? Not that it will help him a lot though.

Don't worry, the reactions are soft, on the contrary, even GM is showing solidarity.

There are some news from that guy who knows him personally in the Montcourt thread on Classim (go to the last posts).
Mathieu has appealed the decision. He was really shocked when he heard of the news too, he had no idea on Thursday he was going to be suspended the next day! Apparently it was just something like 100$ and he lost them and that's it. The sanction seems way too harsh.

There are news in l’Equipe today:
Quote:
He appealed to the TAS to obtain the immediate suspension of the sanction which is “totally out of proportion” according to him.
It was just small bets (always less than 10 euros) on 36 matches of the main tour concerning players he had absolutely no contact with at the time (he was ranked around #300 and bet on the big names). “Of course I wasn’t aware at all I was doing something forbidden. For me it was just a game, without any intent of cheating or enrichment, I even lost money. Nobody was talking of betting as a scourge at the time. And I don’t want to let them use me as an example for their communication.”
His prize money in 2008 amounts to 69’166 $ and the fine of 12’000 $ is painful for him (even though it’s already been reduced from 20’000 to 12’000 $). He just won the Challenger of Tampere and was one of the players in talk for the US Open wild-card of the FFT, so he considers it is detrimental to him not being able to play the Challenger of Vigo like he was supposed to this week.
He expects a lot from the decision of the TAS which should be known next Thursday.

I was surprised to read he was a possible WC for the US Open, especially since he already got one for the AO, but it’s true only guys like Ascione or Prodon are ahead of him in the rankings and most of the other Frenchies will be direct entries.
Still, they should rather give it to a youngster like Mannarino imo since Mathieu already got one this year...

No news about the appeal yet.
Recouderc got the FFT wildcard for the US Open.

Yes, I'm not sure why they picked Recouderc. I was expecting Prodon, Mannarino or ERV, they all have a better ranking.
They had announced the WTA wildcard a few days ago already and were waiting to announce the ATP wildcard, so I think Mathieu really had a chance to get it (if he had managed to solve that suspension story in time).

Thanks so much for the news!!! I didn't actually believe they would do something to his suspension, so for me it's a nice surprise. Glad they've taken the right decision after all.

Another big surprise, I was literally shocked when I read about it FFT didn't even consider him as a WC candidate for this RG while he made such a brilliant performance a year earlier - and now they have unexpectedly given him one for the US Open... Anyway I'm really happy for him! Sorry for the off-topic
