I hope so..., but am not really sure... Since Roger is No.1, he skipped the first round of Davis Cup twice in a row, and I doubt he would join the team in the first round, if the Swiss team competes in the world group next year... I assume he goes deep every year in the Australian Open, where he costs a lot of energy, and thinking of Dubai and the two masters series tournaments in the US, where he has important points to defend or get, I think he skips the DC first round (mostly) every year... But, I will support either decision he makes then.
Stan won his first title last week, but he is "only" 22-17 this season so far, which is not so impressive... I still see he is about around top 50-60 player, where he is actually ranked right now. I really hope he improves more, so that he can be a better force in the DC. If Roger doesn't play, he is the No.1 in the team, and 2nd singles player Bastle/Lammer/Chiudinelli... Thinking of other good teams, like Croatia, USA, Argentina, Spain, whose both singles players are every year pretty good, I can't really compare the Roger-less Swiss team to those.
Even though Switzerland wins the first round, there is no guarantee that Roger plays every further round. He is very careful about his scheduling to maintain his No.1 ranking. And, I would say it is very possible that he maintains his No.1 ranking also the next 5 years. I think he is capable of doint it.
So,,, that's why I am not so optimistic about this.
But, the best wishes to the Swiss team!! I will be there in the arena in this coming Sepetember!! (only Friday) Hopp Schwiiiiiz!!!!
