Support driven by looks?
I have noticed that the better-supported players in this forum tend to be the better-looking players.
Am I right? Do looks determine who you cheer for? We all know that personality comes a distant second to looks for most people when liking someone. This may change when you form a relationship with the boy/girl in question, however most of us have no personal relationship with the tennis pros we support.
So...do you admit to being fickle and only cheering for the 'beautiful people.'
If not, what are your criteria? Maybe success and wealth are the aphrodisiacs! Or do we just like the ones we get to see most often?
And does the limited vocal support for Stepanek and Ljubicic give us the answer? (oh the poll is a joke by the way)...

YES!!!! Safin, Roddick, Nadal, Federer, Hewitt, they are good, but they are also good-looking, hence, more support. Its basic logic, really

Re: Support driven by looks?
Doesn't this happen in every sport? I don't think tennis is any different.

Re: Support driven by looks?
No one is a Stephanek fan because he's a jerk. But there are plenty of Ljubicic fans here, actually.
Andy's considered good looking yet many many people dislike him. Same with Marat, although he has his amazing personality to back him up.
I'm a girl, I admit some are prettier to watch than others, but being pretty is not a need for me to like them. I hate Hewitt even if he's cute, and I love Marcos even though I don't consider him pretty so yeah.

Re: Support driven by looks?
Well, Stepanek and Ljubicic have some rather unpleasant personality traits so I don't think they represent the ugly guys very well...
For me, a good looking player will get me interested but it takes a lot more make them my favorite.

Re: Support driven by looks?
Yes most of the people on these boards are pretty immature with a limited appreciation of the game itself. It isn't much different from other sports but tennis is a game that is about aesthetics more than some contacts sports.
Safin has so many fans but if the bloke looked like Stefanek he would probably be one of the most hated players on tour. I like the guy as well so i'm not judging (and i'm not even attracted to him)

Re: Support driven by looks?
Funny, I was just wondering about this mere moments ago as I wrote a PM to a smart young man on this forum. Would Marat have the support he does if he was unattractive? Would he be as hated as say Coria is by some here for his on-court outbursts and match tanking ("oh, but that's just Marat being quirky and passionate and Russian and whatever...")? I've been intrigued by Marat's incredible fan support for years.
You said your poll is meant to be a joke, but I think you've raised a good question here and hopefully there will be some decent responses. And yes, I know that since I have that guy in my avatar, I may not be taken seriously, but JMG's looks are secondary to me. I'm just as fond of Justin and no one has ever asked him to pose for a swimsuit photo spread.

but, back on-topic, this happens in everything, no? not just sports, but in all aspects of life. If someone is good-looking, they will generally have more friends. If they are a nice person on top of that, they are golden. If one is not as handsome, the least they could do is be a good person. There is nothing worse than an ugly, mean person who hates everyone and everything for no reason.

Re: Support driven by looks?
I like Marat because of his personality and his game. His looks didn't register with me until after I already adored him.

Re: Support driven by looks?
Honestly, I don't know!
All my favourite players are OK in the look department but not sexy, cute, gorgeous, etc IMO. And I like them because of their tennis.
OK, all except Rainer who I think is gorgeous and sexy but not many posters here have the same opinion. And his tennis was pretty good in 2003.

Re: Support driven by looks?
Of the players in my signature, and how I evaluate their looks:
Haas, Safin--Thumbs up.
Federer, Santoro, Fish--Meh. Feds has nice cheekbones.
Agassi, Baghdatis, Nadal--Thumbs down.
Tursunov's blog (which is not a player, but this is too good to pass up): "I must admit I am a freaking handsome devil! Just not very photogenic!!!"
