That picture of Robby with the kid is absolutely adorable... thanks, Deb!

I hope Robby doesn't try to win the hard way tomorrow night, too... he scared the $#!^ out of me today!

Robby fell apart from first set TB

Looks like an exodus of US Americans today.

So Ginepri completed the exodus.

Goldstein, Agassi, Roddick and finally Ginepri!

Poor tournament, it will really suffer. Big difference in the crowds when Americans play.....

Honestly, I'm not surprised about the result. I don't know why, but I already had the feeling that Hrbaty was going to win this match. It was still a great week for Robby and he defended his quarterfinal points from last year. I think he lost early in Washington last year so that he has an opportunity to gain some points next week. Robby is finally getting his game back together and I'm already looking forward to next week's tournament.

I'm not too surprised myself... The only other time these two played each other (2005), Hrbaty beat Robby rather easily. Last night, Robby got broken a bit too easily in the second set... Robby said this week that he doesn't think his serve is as effective as it was last summer. I can't say I disagree with him. Although, sometimes his serve seems good, I don't think it's at a consistently good level throughout a match... If he has the desire and the discipline, he will be working on his serve more before AMS Canada.

I don't think Robby planned to go to Washington this summer, so I think his next tournament will be in Toronto. He has the opportunity to pick up some points there, and I hope he does!

I didn't follow the match last night, but I heard that Robby got an unfair call (from what it sounded like), where the instant replay made an "obvious" error, but the umpire did not overrule! Does anyone know when in the match this happened?? Robby's been known to dwell on negative points during the match after they've happened, and not quite recover...

It happened near the middle of the first set... a combination of technical quirk in the Hawkeye system and user error. My friend at the tournament drove some of the ATP guys back to the hotel and learned that the person who was operating the Hawkeye system did not "tell" the computer which side Hrbaty was serving to. Apparently, when Hrbaty's first serve grazed the net, the operator needed to manually override the default mode... but didn't.

The linesman/woman called the serve out and Hrbaty challenged. The replay showed that the ball was clearly out but, because the system thought he was serving to the other side, the system called it "in." Unfortunately, the umpire is not allowed to overrule the system even though user error was to blame.

My friend also got to drive Robby back to the hotel after the match (exact quote: yeah, that was reeeeeealy fun) and got the impression that it bugged him, though he knew it wasn't the tipping point. Also said that he was completely silent for some time... then the first thing he finally said to the guy with him was something along the lines of "how bad was that call?"

rege, thanks for letting me know!

Your friend is too shy! I would have been talking it up with Robby! So Robby said, "yeah, that was reeeeeealy fun", referring to his match, in general, or referring to the line call dispute? Sounds like he was thinking about it a lot... Come back stronger Robby!

No, the quote was from my friend describing the experience... it was the only time she had to drive a player right after a loss and he came out literally minutes after he walked off the court.

Said he was wearing a cap pulled down low and kinda had that "I just want to get the hell outta here" vibe, so she didn't want to bug him.

oh, I see ...yeah, I guess she would have felt more comfortable talking with him if he didn't look so dejected and knowing he had just lost a match... That's why, if I ever meet Robby, I hope I can meet him before he plays a match, so that if he loses, there's not that sort of awkwardness... although I'd probably give him a hug either way! Thanks for sharing!

She saw him before a match earlier in the week, too... thought about approaching him but said he looked like he was trying to quietly slip through to the locker room (well, as quietly as a guy with a big bag of tennis raquets slung over his shoulder can slip through a small crowd at a tennis tournament) and didn't want to bother him then, either.

She's much too polite!

Glad to see you're joking about that. Under the best circumstances drivers have to know when to speak to a player and when not to. After a loss, you don't say a word. If I had been Robby's driver, I wouldn't have said anything to him (personally, I prefer not to drive the players I know after they lose unless they ask me to. I'm usually kind of bummed too).
