Roger playing Doubles at the Australian Open
I just got some news that Roger will be playing in the doubles at the Australian Open? Roger will be teamed up with childhood friend and winner of the Vienna doubles Yves Allegro.
I was just reading the Vienna results they managed to beat Damm/Suk 7-5, 6-3 and Bhupathi/Max Mirnyi 7-6, 7-5 and they were seeded #3 and # 2 respectively in the tournament.
Hopefully they will continue to have good results and playing doubles can be very beneficial for Roger's singles game.

Great. It will only help him. Doubles is cited by both Rafter (another Roger lover ) and Kafel has big reasons for their singles success. I think Roger will be able to handle it. Roger needs a new swiss partner ever since Swiss lost the beloved Manta Thanks for the info. I hope they meet Raffy and Eagle in the finals, and Raffy turns into Roger's new coach.

Re: Roger playing Doubles at the Australian Open
Bah this isn't good. Very few players succesfully combined grand slam singles and doubles especially in the Australian Open heat.
Even Rafter, a great fan of doubles, eventually had to give up grand slam doubles when he began to go deep in the draw in singles.

I don't think Rafter would be his coach, actually Allegro isn't that bad a doubles player, it depends on whether he feels like playing or not. I have witnessed him playing well and playing with Roger should lift his game.
I did see when Roger/Hrbaty played at the AO one year, they somehow lost a match that they shouldn't have. Seeing their disbelief afterwards was funny.

Roger is good enough to do it, but the question is whether he fit enough at this moment in time. For sure I don't think they will the tournament, but if they win a few matches then it won't cause too much harm. He can use the doubles as good practice.

Rafter won the Oz doubles in 99. Kafel has done double duty for years and did great. Roger is more than fit enough. I think he will drop out of doubles if he plays long matches in the singles and needs to rest. He won't be in bad shape. Like George said, it will help him. I just hope Roger can do well at Oz without a coach. He does know what he has to work on but still he needs a coach. No Raffy won't coach him but I can dream can't I. Him or Sampras would rule LOL!!!!!!!!! Hell, I would love to see Pete coach him just to piss off Brad Gilbert.

Re: Roger playing Doubles at the Australian Open
Heinz Gunthardt could be a coach for Roger.

Re: Roger playing Doubles at the Australian Open
Yes, he was a former Swiss player who was very good at doubles and later became Graf's coach.

I should email him about that one choice. Sounds most realistic.

Re: Roger playing Doubles at the Australian Open
Mind you Heinz was amongh the first ones who got the info that Roger split with Peter and even comented on it.
As Roger playing doubles well there you see that he's already looking ahead for DC. A few matches under their belt won't harm them. And yes I think it's a good choice.

Re: Roger playing Doubles at the Australian Open
Maybe Heinz was looking for an opportunity to coach Roger. Though the DC practice theory sounds reasonable for sure and as Dirk said if he got too much, he could always withdraw from the doubles.

Re: Roger playing Doubles at the Australian Open
does anyone understand the Hong Kong mixed dubs result of Roger and Martina N vs Max Myrni and ? Dement or Sharp, 8-5, looking like Roj won, but then the others in the winners column? Anyway, I am chuffed, glad, Roger will play some dubs...as long as he continues to win the singles

Re: Roger playing Doubles at the Australian Open
They played together in last year's Ao right? I'm sure they will be a good pair not just for the slam but more importantly for the DC championships as Marc is on verge of retirement.
