Default Federer paid 'break up' fee to Lacroix and deal with Rolex

June 15, 2006
___Roger Federer has signed a multi-year endorsement deal with Rolex. Federer previously endorsed Rolex before signing with Maurice Lacroix in 2004. He paid a ‘break-up fee’ to Lacroix to end his deal with the company two years into a five-year contract.

In an interview with Europa Star’s International Editor, Keith W. Strandberg, Philippe Merk, CEO of Maurice Lacroix Worldwide, said he was pleased to have had a good run with Federer and he wishes him well. "The deal with Federer was a positive association for us," Merk explains. "I don't feel this is a negative at all. It's excellent for Maurice Lacroix. The response to this has been 'So what?' 'What else is new?'
"We achieved much more than we thought we would, having hosted 15 major events in our most important markets, so I think it had a pretty good effect," Merk continues. "The remaining time we had with him would probably not have had the same impact."

Federer is already featured on the Rolex website as one of their ambassadors. They have a good tag line on his page: ‘Let's not talk history yet. He's still making it’
._____

Man, can you believe this, surely he'll get much more $$$$ from Rolex and he kicked Lacroix ass with a break-up fee. We all know that his $2M/year lifetime deal from Wilson guarantee him to have income even when he is nothing more playing tennis, I'm just wonder how much this deal worth. He has nothing to worry for the rest of his life.

I wish I had a lifetime deal.

Just shows you that Rolex came crawling back to Feds when all their endorsees were struggling (i.e. Roddick, Ferrero) after they dumped Feds.

Life time deals are no good. I wouldnt like to have one. A company like slazenger was very popular 10 years ago and look at it now. Doesnt suck but its not the best. Henman is still using it. Dunlop as well

i'm not sure what you're trying to say, but considering he was only 2 years into a 5 year contract, if he wanted out of it, he had to pay them a fee, he didn't have a choice. it's like if you cancel your 2-year cell phone plan after 6 months you pay some huge fee. no difference Obviously whatever Rolex is going to pay him made the fee worth it

if someone was going to offer you $2 million a year for the rest of your life even after you retire, are you saying with a straight face that you'd turn it down?

btw, doesn't Dunlop own Slazenger?

I know that. I mean, Roger made his own decision split from Lacroix and join to Rolex. It should be a larger amount of contract made him broke off deal with Lacroix when the contract in progress, right. That's why you should have a pre-contract protection to prohibit one-sided deal severance in accordance with the term they've agreed. Lacroix could do nothing without it.

Many would be thrilled at supporting Lacroix and would spend their time using the money to support those less advantaged, not on hiring lawyers to get them a better deal and wrangle out of an old one. But I'm probably old fashioned.

Anyway, I now hope he loses, very embarassingly.

You want him to lose badly at Wimbledon because he switched which watch company he endorses? None of us know the details behind this. Andre reportedly switched from Nike to Addidas because Addidas was willing to do more for his charity. Perhaps it's the same situtation here?

Default Lacroix is too small for a Roger Federer.

Ur not one of Lacroix stockholders, right???

Rolex needs a great active ambassador in men tennis so they have no another choice beside Roger. Safin, Ferrero, and Roddick are .
So this is the good deal no matter how much money Rolex make the steps to trick Roger for separating from Lacroix, dibs on the money.
