Why I open this vote?
In case of 1977 Vilas vs 1997 Connors, some people says that Connors' ranking above Vilas because Wimbledon, US Open, Masters and WCTs were higher weighting than other tournaments. As the same principles, either Connors or Lendl should take NO.1 from J. McEnroe in 1982.

Connors. Got the big double. Neither Lendl or McEnroe won a GS, Connors beat Lendl in the US final and Mac in the Wimbledon final.
In addition, Lendl owned Mac that year and Connors beat Lendl when it counted.
Most people regarded Connors as the no.1 that year anyway.

In my opinion, Connors earned the #1 ranking for the following reasons:
- He captured Wimbledon and US Open titles (Lendl and McEnroe each won no Slams in '82)
- He was 18-1 in Grand Slam event matches (vs. 11-2 for McEnroe and 9-2 for Lendl)
- He was #1 in the Grand Prix point standings (Vilas was 2nd, Lendl 3rd and McEnroe 4th)
- He won 7 Grand Prix titles (Lendl won 4 + the Masters, McEnroe won 5)
- The ITF Panel chose Connors as #1
- Lance Tingay in World of Tennis: "That double success (US and Wimbledon) in 1982 made him the player of the year par excellence"
- John Parsons in World of Tennis: "Although he did not finish the year on top of the of the ATP computer rankings, Connors was #1 on all the recognized human lists"
Lendl deserves respect for his record, especially on the WCT tour. He won all 10 WCT events he played, winning all 45 matches. (McEnroe was 8-2 on the WCT tour winning 0 events, and Connors did not play WCT in 1982). However his overall ranking is impacted by losses at the French and US Opens and his failure to appear at Wimbledon.
McEnroe won four significant fall events (San Francisco, Sydney, Tokyo and Wembley), and also was 8-0 in Davis Cup singles. He also finished #1 on the ATP Computer and the WCT Nixdorf Computer rankings. However, he was rated #3 by both Tingay and Collins (each of whom rated Connors 1st and Lendl 2nd)

Its gotta be Connors. 7 titles and 2 of them are Grand Slams. Lendl, whom I loved, may have won 15 titles that year but he didn't win a single Slam. The Slam titles win out.

As your principle, Vilas should supress Connors for NO.1 in 1977
